Katherine Swynford by Lesley Smith

Live Theatre, storytelling
Travel back in time to the 14th century when there really were knights in shining armour and flags flying across this medieval green and pleasant land of England. You will discover the wonders of the period in this powerful performance by renowned historian, and Crich favourite, Lesley Smith, curator of Tutbury Castle.

Katherine, sister-in-law to the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, was renowned for her great beauty, and was regarded by some of her contemporaries as intriguing, and even dangerous!

John of Gaunt, Shakespeare’s “time honoured Lancaster” was the fourth son of King Edward III, and was considered to be one of the most powerful princes of the 14th century, virtually ruling England on the accession of Richard II at the age of 10.

The story of Katherine and John is of one of the greatest love affairs recorded in English history.

Lesley speaks as if in the year 1399, a year of great upheaval, when Katherine would have been about 50, 4 years before her death. She appears as Katherine, Duchess of Lancaster, in a spectacular costume of the period.

Suitable for those aged 16 and over.
