MERRIE ENGLAND

MUSICAL PERFORMANCE
Chesterfield Gilbert and Sullivan Society has decided to ring the changes this year by staging Merrie England, composed by Edward German, at three different venues in the local area over two weekends in October. This popular light opera has been specially adapted and abridged by Society member Max Taylor, with this version being originally performed by Matlock G and S Society in 2012.

Set in the period after the defeat of the Spanish Armada and during May Day celebrations, Merrie England tells a tale of the rivalry of Sir Walter Raleigh & the Earl of Essex for the affections and attentions of Queen Elizabeth I.

With small orchestra, Tudor costume and stirring songs and music – including the well known “Yeomen of England”, “Oh Peaceful England” and “Dan Cupid hath a Garden” – this is an entertainment not to be missed.

Performances at Ashover Parish Hall on Friday 6 October, Bakewell Medway Centre on Saturday 7 October and Hasland Village Hall on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 Oct (all start 7.30pm )

Tickets £10 available from The Medway Centre or Carole Pilkington (01246 207893)
