Present Tense, Future Perfect? | Open until 7th July

In October 2020, Kelly O'Brien and Thomas Wynne undertook an artist residency with Artcore for a duration of two months titled Present Tense Future Perfect?

Through this residency, Artcore wanted to give the artists an opportunity to make new work dealing with the tensions caused by current uncertainties, whilst looking forward to a brighter future.

Error & Power Exhibition Launch | Launches Friday 13th August, 5-7pm

You are invited to the launch of Error & Power, an exhibition featuring the work of two of Artcore's artists in residence: Naho Matsuda and Neale Willis.

Book Here: Exhibition Launch - Error & Power

About the Exhibition

Naho and Neale began their residency with Artcore in May 2020. For Error & Power, both artists explore the strategy of creating space for chance, and the potential for mistakes and errors to shape their work, whether by design or accident.

Naho takes the infamous Milgram Obedience Experiment as her source, developing an imagined narrative from the word-pairs that the ‘learner’ in the experiment was required to memorise correctly. The punishment for failure to do so was electrocution, administered by the volunteer ‘teacher’, testing the extent of their obedience to the voice of authority.

Neale’s work for Error & Power is a test of a different kind; questioning the logic and limitations of both human and artificial intelligence, Neale shows us the somewhat bizarre and idiotic (though strangely beautiful) outcomes of their combined efforts to reconstruct online images of domestic bathrooms.

News from Nowhere

News From Nowhere is a new installation work sited in a former news kiosk, as part of Artcore’s Cabin Fever artist residency programme. The work is a diorama of the Derbyshire landscape, referencing the area’s past ties to manufacturing and the industrial revolution, but also looking forward to ways of reimagining our area given the current socio-political climate and future possibilities for transformation.

The work takes its name from William Morris’s book of the same name: a Victorian science-fiction tale about the possibilities of a utopian future; ‘nowhere’ can be anything, it is ours to dictate. The installation references Morris’s work as a designer, conservationist and figure in the industrial revolution through the creation of three repeating patterns: one filled with native British flora, one representing the cotton and silk industries and one highlighting folk culture such as well-dressing and the maypole.

Silhouettes of local landmarks can be seen such as Belper, Cromford and Derby Silk Mill, Alport Castle, Chrome Hill and the Roaches in the Peak District, and Derby Arboretum. Public contributions based on the notion of an ideal future will expand the landscape over the course of the residency.

Faces & Places Of The Square by Ray Gumbley

The team at Artcore are amazed by the wonderful work of photographer Ray Gumbley who has been in Artcore's Cabin residency on Osnabruck Square for the past month.

During his time there, he has taken portraits of the local workers and residents surrounding the square. This is an ongoing project which attempts to engage with the local community past and present. This unique collection of work will be archived and placed in a time capsule along with cuttings and photographs added by the public.

Towards the end of the residency, Artcore had an excellent exhibition all around the Osnabruck Square, in the windows of the Cabin & Artcore Gallery. It was great to see all the response and such a great community captured in these photographs.

Supporting the Wireworks Project | Saturday 14th August, 2-5pm

On behalf of artist Ivan Smith, Artcore would like to invite you to the launch of The Wireworks project.

The Wireworks Project is delighted to announce the launch of its new project space with an exhibition called ‘Place’ which features the work of artists Ivan Smith and Anthony Shepherd. The opening will also feature two works by renowned Indian artist Chintan Upadhyay.

On Saturday 14th August 2021, the Wireworks Project will open its doors for the first time to the public to showcase its facilities, exhibition and new programme of residencies, projects and future exhibitions.

Please come and join over a glass of wine to celebrate the launch of this new venture, see the work and meet the artists.

‘Place’ explores the location of the new studio, which divides, like a fault line two opposing environments. On one side you have the historical Johnson & Nephew wireworks established in 1870 and on the other, you have one of Britain’s most beautiful ancients woods.

New sculptures and installations have been developed specifically for the exhibition, which respond to the place they find themselves, maybe brokering a new conversation between these two opposing environments.

From constructing a maze, creating almost 100 badges in one day, keeping messy clay workshops under control and just overall providing the participants with welcoming and exciting experiences, these volunteers have done an amazing job!

Thank you to Adi, Amy, Ewelina, Kesha, Mariam and Njomza!

New Starters - Melanie Wheeler

I have started at Artcore as a Project Coordinator focusing on building and strengthening our relationships with the local and regional community. I am an interdisciplinary artist, researcher and project leader based in Nottingham and my practice moves across the mediums of installation, sound, film, participation and social practice. I am interested in creative methods of skills exchange, encouraging collaboration across disciplines and communities, and testing the functions of creative practices to see how different methods affect the way subject and audience interact.

My previous experience includes: leading community engagement projects for Arts Melbourne in Derbyshire, working as part of the public programming team at CRATE Studios in Kent, as well as independent projects for Notts FOSAC, INDEX Festival and Margate NOW. I am an alumni of Open School East and currently an associate of the New Midland Group based at PRIMARY and a studio member at Near Now in Nottingham.

I am really looking forward to working with a wide range of creative and community groups across Derby and the wider region.
