Buxton Fringe announces three weeks of fun to mark Fringe40!

PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release September 27th 2018

Buxton Festival Fringe, which is getting ready to celebrate its 40th year, has announced that the 2019 Fringe will be longer than usual with the dates running from Wednesday July 3 to Wednesday July 24 - a full three weeks.

The Fringe traditionally begins on a Wednesday and finishes two and a half weeks’ later on a Sunday but in a bid to celebrate Fringe40 and also to allow more time for family events after the schools break up, the committee has decided to extend the Fringe by three days. With a bumper crop of acts likely to be involved in this special year, the move will also give audiences more of a chance to get round the many shows on offer. The Fringe Awards ceremony will take place on the final Sunday as usual.

Buxton Fringe began in 1980 with 28 music entries, 6 dance entries, 5 drama entries and 17 “miscellaneous”. It has mushroomed ever since with 2018’s Fringe featuring over 180 entrants. Buxton International Festival started one year earlier in 1979 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2019.

Fringe chair Keith Savage says: “We are already working with a number of partners to make the 2019 July Festivals special and memorable. As the town will be in the public eye more than ever, the Fringe is excited to have the chance to give visitors and performers the richest possible experience.”

The Fringe will be open for entries on December 1st 2018. Anyone wanting to become involved either as a performer or behind the scenes can find more information on www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or meet the team at the open-to-all AGM on Wednesday November 14th, 7pm at the Green Man Gallery, Hardwick Square South, Buxton.

There is also a competition to produce artwork for the Fringe40 programme cover with a £100 prize on offer! See the website for full details.
