Buxton Fringe announces art contest!

With this year’s event (July 5-23) just around the corner, Buxton Fringe is already thinking about 2018 and has announced an open-to-all art competition for next year’s programme cover.

The Fringe has had some terrific artwork featured on its programme covers including this year’s photograph from designer Tom Mason featuring tiny model figures against a vintage map background. Past covers have also been provided by art students from Fringe sponsor, the University of Derby.

Accidental gallery goes from strength to strength

Elephantstones Gallery, Hayfield, is celebrating its 3rd Birthday with an exhibition of Harry Ousey's abstracted landscapes.

The exhibition will run throughout the May Bank Holiday weekend (27th-29th) until Friday 2nd June and the gallery is open 10am - 4pm.

New Website for Buxton Opera House

Have you seen Buxton Opera House’s new website? The new redesign, which went live at the beginning of the month is said to make finding out about events, easier than ever before.

Sinfonia Viva Tunes Up for Anniversary Tour

Derby-based Sinfonia Viva has confirmed the line-up for its 35th anniversary ‘Cabinet of Curiosity’ regional tour.

Sinfonia Viva is the East Midlands’ only professional orchestra. As well as building up a loyal following of classical music fans, it has won awards and national recognition for its education and community outreach work.

Highlights over the years has included a Grammy nomination for its work with Damon Albarn – leading to their inclusion on the Gorillaz album ‘Plastic Beach’ – and an invitation to record with soul music legend Bobby Womack.

HUUB Design Clinches Top Awards

Specialist wetsuit and accessories designers, Huub, has clinched two prestigious industry awards for the fifth year running after an ambitious research and development programme

HUUB clinched the Best triathlon wetsuit and best Tri-suit brands at the 220 Triathlon awards.

Huub wetsuits have been designed to improve a swimmer's position in the water, making them more hydrodynamic. They allow biceps and calf muscles to move more freely, making them more comfortable.

Return Tour Signals Exciting Growth For Hubbub Theatre Company

Derby-based Hubbub Theatre Company is starting a three-date regional tour later this month to showcase the organisation’s exciting plans for the future.

Hubbub Theatre Company is an integrated ensemble of performers with and without moderate learning disabilities.

The company has re-worked its successful ‘Kessoku’ show – meaning ‘unity’ in Japanese - into a 30-minute remix featuring five of its talented performers with physical theatre and circus artist, Ria Ashcroft and Hubbub’s composer and musician, Matt Marks.

Bespoke Collection Box Designed For Déda

Regional dance house Déda has teamed up with Derby Museums to design an eye catching, and dynamic collection box, created in the workshops at the Silk Mill Museum.

This one-off piece of art has been designed to highlight Déda's charitable status and ambitions as well as to raise funds for its work across local communities. All money raised will be doubled by Arts Council England.

Funding for music making projects (England)

Youth Music, England's largest children's music charity, which provides funding for music-making projects, has announced new application deadlines for its grant making programmes. Grants are available to fund developmental music-making projects for children and young people up in challenging circumstances as well as projects that support the development of the workforce, organisations and the wider sector. Youth Making's funding programme is made up of three separate funds. 

These are:

British Film Institute Audience Fund launched (UK)

The British Film Institute (BFI) has launched a new Audience Fund. The Audience Fund is designed to support a range of audience orientated activities such as film festivals, distribution releases, multiplatform distribution proposals, touring film programmes, large scale and ambitious film programmes. A total of £5.6million is available annually and the fund will support two types of awards.

Funding for arts & music projects (UK)

The Austin Hope and Pilkington has a new round of funding round. Grants of £5,000 are available to registered charities that have an income of over £500,000 for projects that relate to Music and the Arts with priority given to projects that focus on: 

•    Homelessness
•    Domestic abuse
•    Prisoners/offenders
•    Training/education
•    Counselling/support
•    Refugees and asylum seekers
•    Activities for those with limited access or opportunities.
