Cathedral Quarter Showcases Events
Derby’s Cathedral Quarter has published a programme of events, street entertainment and performances to showcase the diverse offer available in the leisure and cultural heart of the city centre. The leaflet will be available at Cathedral Quarter businesses, in Art Boxes across the city and county as well as online at www.derbycathedralquarter.co.uk
The leaflet contains information on this year’s CQ Saturdays programme as well as details of events and activities taking place at venues throughout the Cathedral Quarter. CQ Saturdays Towers, Tunnels and Tales Tours led by historian Richard Felix, will return this year following refurbishment works at Derby Cathedral and will be held on the first Saturday of every month starting on Saturday February 6. The tour includes a climb of the Cathedral tower and an exploration of the tunnels underneath the Market Place.
From May onwards, the second Saturday of the month will see the CQ Saturdays Street Circus in partnership with Déda Producing, offering free entertainment with live acts performing at the Waterfall stage in the Market Place. CQ Saturdays Knickerbocker Glorious begins in April with free, family-friendly live entertainment in the Market Place on the third Saturday of the Month produced by the Cathedral Quarter BID and city arts organisation Furthest from the Sea. CQ Saturdays Street Theatre, produced by Ashrow Theatre will also return to the streets of the Cathedral Quarter from May and then every fourth Saturday of the month until August.
Performances, events and exhibitions at the Cathedral Quarter’s arts venues are also highlighted in the programme – including those at QUAD, Déda, Derby Museums, Derby Cathedral and those led by Derby LIVE which range from the monthly Farmers’ Markets every third Thursday to the St George’s Day Parade on Saturday April 23.
Cathedral Quarter venues will also play an important role in the city’s festival calendar starting with the new 2Q Festival and the Derby Comedy Festival in April through to Derby Festé in September and the Folk Festival in October.
Martin Langsdale is chair of the Cathedral Management Group, which drives forward activities under the area’s BID status. He said “when we started to map out what was happening in the Cathedral Quarter this year, it soon became clear that we needed to put all the information in one easy to read publication that we will update in the summer and then again later in the year. Our aim in bringing together this information is that local people and visitors alike can have the information about everything happening in the Cathedral Quarter at their fingertips.
We are particularly proud of the fantastic range of free street entertainment and tours under the CQ Saturdays programme with something happening every Saturday in the Spring and Summer months. The Cathedral Quarter is home to most of the city’s premium leisure and cultural venues who offer a rich tapestry of events, performances and exhibitions. And the Cathedral Quarter continues to play an important role in Derby’s growing calendar of festivals which have something for everyone throughout the year. We hope that this will encourage more people to the Cathedral Quarter and, whilst they are here, enjoy everything that this unique and diverse area has to offer.”
