Fri 27 February - Sat 14 March 2015 Derby Theatre

Rebecca Ryan is to star as Solace, a girl on the road in search of her birth mother

Derby Theatre’s big production for spring 2015 will be Olivier Award-winning Mike Kenny’s adaptation of Carnegie award-winning Siobhan Dowd’s novel Solace of the Road, on from Fri 27 February until Sat 14 March.

Solace of the Road will star Rebecca Ryan, who will be familiar to many through her roles in Channel 4’s Shameless and Waterloo Road for the BBC. Rebecca also played Jo in Derby Theatre and Hull Truck Theatre’s co-production of A Taste of Honey earlier this year. Playing the role of her mother will be Polly Lister, who played the knockout role of the mother in Derby Theatre’s smash-hit production of Cooking with Elvis in 2013. Joining Rebecca and Polly will be Naomi Ackie, Neal Craig, Jack Finch and Robert Vernon, all with numerous theatre and TV credits to their name. “Hurry, hurry, hurry Holly Hogan, before the road disappears under your feet. “

It’s Holly’s Birthday and she’s going on a road trip to find her mum. Head-strong and street-smart, she boldly sets out as her glamourous blonde alter ego, Solace. So begins a bittersweet, and sometimes hilarious, journey as Solace swaggers and Holly tiptoes across England and through memory, discovering her true self, and unlocking the secrets of her past. Leaving her foster home behind Solace’s sharp talk helps her navigate a host of curious characters on this road trip which turns out to be more about finding herself than looking for answers. Olivier Award-winning writer Mike Kenny adapts Siobhan Dowd’s Carnegie award-winning novel. Alive with the passions and frustrations of growing up, this witty and touching play will inspire anyone who is, or ever has been, a teenager. Accompanying the production of Solace of the Road is a long term project specifically aimed at working and engaging with teenagers in the region. It has significance within the school curriculum and wider community and sessions, consultations and workshops have run to raise awareness of the issues that many children in care face but may not want to talk about.

Through the Solace of the Road project and performance, Derby Theatre aims to forge strong links between children in care, schools, associated partners, young audiences and powerful literature and live theatre. Solace of the Road will deliver vibrant and engaging approaches to teaching and learning that enables all learners to develop critical thinking, independent learning skills, empathy and understanding about themselves.

There are currently over 70,000 children in care in the UK and this vital new piece of work from Derby Theatre uses humour, imagination and courage to tell just one of these stories.
