Event Highlights How To Plan For Better Later Life

Family-owned funeral directors G. Wathall & Son Ltd teamed up with Age UK Derby & Derbyshire to organise an event at Derby’s Eagle Centre to encourage local people to take simple steps to make their end of life plans.

Wathalls were on hand with information about pre-payment funeral plans, bereavement support and options available for funerals, cremations and burials. Age UK had a wide range of advice and information about support available to older people.

Other companies and organisations involved included Dove River Media who create life story tributes; solicitors providing information about financial planning and making a will with Prime Health attending to discuss care at home and the NHS who highlighted organ donation.

Helen Wathall, Managing Director of G Wathall & Son in Macklin Street, Derby, and Union Street, Ashbourne, said: “A recent survey showed that 83% of people in the UK are uncomfortable discussing death. “We want to tackle this taboo and change attitudes towards discussing later life, death and bereavement. “By doing this – we know that this brings people of all ages greater peace of mind that their wishes will be known on key aspects about their later life and that they and their families will have financial security in the future. “The information event was well attended by visitors to the Eagle Centre who embraced our goal of raising awareness of the choices available to them when planning for their later life and the simple steps that can be taken to make their end of life experience better, both for themselves and for their loved ones.”
