Festival Praise For Derby College Students

Students from Derby College have been applauded for their volunteer work to support the first 2Q Festival in Derby.

2Q Festival was a one day, live music festival featuring more than 50 bands across six venues in the city centre. Music, Media Public Services and Travel and Tourism students from the College’s Joseph Wright, Roundhouse and Broomfield Hall campuses volunteered to support the event as part of the work experience programme. They undertook a number of roles from technical and social media support to helping to sell tickets and liaising with customers.

2Q Festival Production Manager Tom Kitchen said: “The quality of the student work in all areas was outstanding. “This was a complex event across several venues which required extensive manpower.  The support of Derby College has therefore been invaluable. “They contributed to one of the most successful events in Derby history and feedback from both customers and stakeholders including bands and their associated entourages has been monumental. “Some very prolific music industry professionals have commended the event as being the most well organised inner city music festival that they have ever been a part of. “Working with members of the employer liaison team has been a great experience.  From initial contact between the college and the festival, we have been able to create some amazing roles for the participating students that are all relevant to their academic studies. “It is an exciting prospect to know that the students will be able to apply what they have learned within the classroom into a real world context.
“This was the first year that the event took place, and to have Derby College working alongside us has been a great platform for future progression. We hope that we can continue supporting each other for many years to come.”

Music student Nathanael Wheatley said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to work on the real-life side of the music industry – gaining an insight into everything from sound technology to stage management.”
And Music Technology student Luke Deakin added: “Being part of the 2Q Festival has been very hands on and really enhanced my knowledge of the music sector.”
