Junction Arts: Amazing opportunities and our latest news

This year, Junction Arts' key mission is to bring our communities back together safely. The Mental Health Foundation note that getting involved in arts, social activities and interaction within our communities alleviates anxiety, depression and stress, and together we can be at the fore front to champion this!

Through your support we can continue to help vulnerable people who are still isolated, such as the residents at Autumn Grange Care Home. Residents there took part in Home Comforts, our online program which creations social opportunities for care home residents through creative workshops.
“Sadly our last session today with the fabulous Junction Arts, we have enjoyed this programme so much! Thank you for the cake too!”

Project Updates

Art at Ashgate Installation

Final preparations are underway for the new Art at Ashgate art installation. 10 three dimensional hearts have been created from fabric printed with the artwork made by participants in the project and each heart has been embroidered by talented sewers from across the area, including members of the Chesterfield Embroiderers Guild.

The framed hearts will be delivered to the hospice this week and hung in an area for staff, patients and visitors to admire and take pleasure from.

Clay Cross Community Consultation and Public Art

Along with artist Lucie Maycock and A Different Light Collective, we’re currently creating an exhibition of the Clay Cross Community Consultation and Public Art project.

In the run up to the stunning digital projections in the town in September ,the exhibition will tour venues in and around Clay Cross. It will be a celebration of the project so far and feature some of the beautiful artwork created by participants who worked with Lucie earlier in the year.

A full list of dates and venues will follow, but we can confirm the first stop of the tour will be West Studios in Chesterfield from 3rd- 18th June.
The exhibition will also be a feature of the Tapton Lock Festival. For the first time we will have a film tent in which the newly commissioned Clay Cross film will be screened.

An online version of the exhibition can now be seen on the Junction Arts website alongside information about the wider project. Click here to visit the online exhibition.

Tapton Lock Festival 2021

Everyone here at Junction Arts is very excited to be working towards our first live event since lockdown. The Tapton Lock Festival had to be cancelled last year and with that in mind, we’re planning for an event that’s better than ever; bringing people together in nature to have fun and make new memories with family and friends.

With our partners at the Countryside Service and thanks to all our supporters and funders, including Harron Homes and Wilkins Vardy, we’ll be offering visitors all the established family favourites as well as new activities and performances over the weekend of the 11th & 12th September.

Details will follow in the coming months, so watch this space!

Finally, we’ve also set up a fundraising campaign on Virgin Money Giving to raise funds for an outdoor theatre performance to entertain our visitors. If you would like to find out more and support the campaign, click here.

First Art

Junction Arts have been working with First Art to deliver projects in South Normanton. We are currently working with First Art to deliver Six Streets Social Club to strengthen connections amongst residents through a range of creative and cultural activities.

Residents on six streets in South Normanton received a special invite pack through their doors to join the social club and get involved in making some good things happen on their street.

This Girl Codes

On Monday 19th April we held a lunchtime talk with artist Cora Glasser via Zoom. Cora has been working on This Girl Codes since the project began in 2017 and shared her experience of bringing arts, heritage and technology to a community project. If you missed the live talk you can watch it here.

PROCESSIONS

A banner created by Junction Arts is to feature in a new exhibition, Women Making History.
Created by women and girls from across Bolsover District, the banner will be displayed as part of Women Making History exhibition. The exhibition will include more than 100 hand-crafted banners commissioned for PROCESSIONS; a mass-participation artwork that took place in June 2018, commissioned by 14-18 NOW and produced by Artichoke. This free ticketed exhibition will take place from 2 June – 11 July 2021, at London Scottish House in Westminster.

Expressing women’s concerns about gender-based violence, reproductive and economic rights, social exclusion, homophobia and trans allyship, these banners are a powerful reminder of the importance of feminist activism and the ongoing struggle for gender equality. Inspired by the banners of the suffrage movement, these vibrant and elaborate artworks by women's groups across the UK, and leading figures in British art and fashion, including Vivienne Westwood and Claudette Johnson, will be displayed together for the first and only time. Visitors will be able to view up close the craftsmanship and collaboration which went into each banner.

WORK

Throughout 2018-20, Junction Arts worked with Animate Projects and partners over the Midlands on a collaborative moving image project linked to the context of ‘work’ and what it means to contemporary lives.

We were delighted to work with artist-filmmaker Esther Johnson and Bolsover Freedom Community project to tell the real stories of local residents in a short film called a ROLE to PLAY. Esther brings together the lived experiences and dreams of project participants, including former Bolsover MP Dennis Skinner, who navigate the changing economic landscape of post-industrial Bolsover, one of the most deprived towns within the Midlands. After having had some local and regional screenings, a ROLE to PLAY will now be screened at 8pm on Saturday 8th May at the Oberhausen short film festival in Germany which we believe to be the oldest film festival of its kind. It’s great to think that our communities in Bolsover will be screened to international audiences. You can find more information here.

Not just the London Marathon! Last month we introduced you to our first ever London Marathon runner, Glen Roberts Holland from Paltaton and so far, he has had an amazing start to his training and fundraising.

Through the snow and sunshine of the last month, Glen has hit his personal 100km target for April alone and on top of this had raised over a third of his total fundraising target! Thank you Glen, you are doing amazing!! However not satisfied with running just one marathon, Glen has also set himself two more running challenges this year for Junction Arts.

On 29th August, Glen will be completing an 18-mile Rotherham Central Station-Chesterfield Station run (calling at Sheffield and Dronfield!) And following this he will also be running in the Sheffield Half Marathon the week before the big run. “These are just small tweaks to my training plan and give great opportunities to raise awareness of the charity.”

To keep you up to date, we will be sharing updates on our social media and through the newsletter on how Glen is getting on. If you would like to donate to Glen’s year of challenges or follow his journey closer, please head to his fundraising page here.

Can you help Junction Arts do more?

If Glen’s journey has inspired you to want to bring your community back together, we are here to help!

Not sure where to start? How about setting your own challenge of walking 50miles in a month, shave your head or run an online auction? Could your work place or school help you achieve your goal? Please do get in touch with Hannah@junctionarts.org with your ideas and thoughts to arrange a chat to help you on your way.
