Our Work: 20 Memories from 2020
We did our best to keep creating art with our communities last year and although it was at a distance, we still had so much fun delivering our projects and connecting with you all. So, to celebrate the end of a very challenging year, here’s 20 of our best Junction Arts memories from 2020. We hope you enjoy reminiscing as much as we did!

Home Comforts
January can be a difficult month, when feeling a bit low is all too common and this year in particular we need cheering up more than ever. To help our care home residents and isolated individuals lift their mood we delivered a series of workshops led by artist Miriam Robinson. 'Creating with Colour' was the name of the activity. Participants used different brushes and sponges to apply colour to templates, creating some wonderful images.
Miriam sent out paints in powder form and talked people through how to create vibrant colours, encouraging people to mix with abandon! We think you’ll agree that the results are impressive. Miriam will be delivering the next creative activity, 'A Special Photo', in February.
Creswell Gets Creative
Participants of Creswell Gets Creative also received art materials through the post this month, in preparation for their second remote art activity.
We’d booked artist Joanna Allen to run a Venetian Palaces Collage workshop for us way back in April 2020, after seeing her work at the Haddon Hall Art Fair. Unfortunately, we had to cancel due to the Covid restrictions but Joanna has now been able to adapt the activity for working at home and has also made a series of short films that we’ve shared over WhatsApp.
This group have been working together now for over two years and have taken part in so many different art forms, learning lots of new skills along the way and we’re looking forward to seeing how they get on with the collage challenge!
Clay Cross Public Art
The community workshops have already begun, working with residents of The Old Vicarage Care Home in Clay Cross. The community artist Lucie Maycock, will be introducing participants to the Town Investment Plan, looking in particular at urban regeneration, skills and infrastructure, connectivity and the proposed area for development.
Participants creative responses were made through painting to music, giving the residents a very different experience to their ‘normal’ day. The session was a success and staff commented on one resident in particular, they said: "Margaret loved it and was smiling throughout the workshop. It can be hard to keep Margaret in her seat, so she was clearly enjoying herself’.
Lucie has scheduled in other workshops called 'Exploring Charcoal’, linking the medium of charcoal to the railways and the Clay Cross ventilation shafts. Participants will explore the medium and create ‘smoke like’ pieces of artwork.
The creative material from these and all the workshops will be passed onto the digital artist, Will Lindley from Different Light Collective and will help to inform and inspire the finished digital projection.
This Girl Codes
To round off the first year of This Girl Codes we created a publication with our lead artist Cora Glasser, showcasing the imaginative pieces produced through our Atomic Poems workshops in October.
All participant’s Fibonacci poems were included in the book, alongside images from Cora’s temporary installation at Bolsover Castle. The beautiful images include 3D printed poems and projections juxtaposed with 17th century interiors making the book a perfect This Girl Codes piece; combining creativity, heritage and technology.
The book will be launched online on 10th February 2020, via https://thisgirl.codes/ Throughout the day @ThisGirlCodesUK on social media, as we share poems and images with our online community.

Become a Lumiere artist in 2021. Up to six awards will now be available offering the chance for anyone in the UK to apply with a brilliant idea to be part of Lumiere, the UK’s leading light festival, which returns to Durham from 18th to 21st November 2021.
