Physical Theatre Course Launched At Déda

A new Physical Theatre course has been launched at Déda in Derby, which aims to improve budding actors’ understanding of the different aspects of Physical Theatre.

The first course – Physical Theatre and Comedy – starts at the venue in Chapel Street on Thursday September 17 with a second course focusing on Physical Theatre and Performance starting on November 12.

Both are run by accomplished actor and director Gerry Flanagan who runs Shifting Sands Theatre Company in Matlock.

He explained: “The course is aimed at those who are new to performing and more established practitioners who want to stretch themselves further and develop their self-expression.

“This is a different approach to comedy and performance.  We work in a relaxed, playful and energetic way – developing physical expression on stage rather than focusing on the delivery of text.

“Our workshops release creative expression through play.  The objective is to enthuse and stimulate – focusing this playfulness for each other and the audience in a fun way.

“Our aim is to bring people together over the coming months and hopefully to perform our original work in a variety of settings including at Déda and at next year’s Derby Festé.”

Déda’s Head of Dance Development and Learning Clare Limb added: “Gerry is an accomplished actor, director and teacher and we were keen to work with him to offer this course as part of our adult class programme.

“The Physical Theatre course is open to anyone aged 16 and over and we hope that it will encourage many more people into the performing arts and expand the repertoire of those already involved in theatre.

“As a key partner in Derby Festé we also hope that this will be the start of a local company who will add to the high quality entertainment that is enjoyed by thousands of people at the annual weekend festival in the city in the future.”

The six week courses at Déda in Chapel Street cost £72.   For more information about the Déda class programme and performances at the dance house, please visit www.deda.uk.com or telephone 01332 370911.
