AUGUST PROGRAMME

Reimagining Derby Silk Mill Museum of Making through a monthly programme of prototyping activities and workshops during 2016 and early 2017. Exploring ideas and approaches in the ‘Project Lab’ to help create an outstanding Museum of Making experience at the site of the world’s first factory.

The Project Lab is open throughout 2016 and early 2017 on the following days: Thursday 3-9pm* Saturday 1-5pm*

THURSDAY 4 AUGUST

The Art of Artefacts! Collections Workshop 1
3-9pm Just drop in
How might we group the collections? Share your ideas about how we could display objects together, which objects you like best and how you would categorise the artefacts to tell the story of making in Derby.
Patch-a-thon
4-7pm  Just drop in
A team of volunteers have been working hard on creating a giant picnic blanket for the launch of FIGMENT 2016! Tie dye, applique, paint, draw, embroider and transform a rectangle of fabric to add to our evolving picnic blanket.
Derby Writer’s Hub
6-8pm Just drop in - suitable for adults
Join Derby’s writing community to write, share skills, exchange ideas, socialize and find inspiration.

If you’re interested in getting involved in the manufacturing side of coproducing the museum, Workshop Supervisor, Steve Smith will show you around and give you the initial training required.

Meet the STEAM-Powered Maker - Stevie Davies 2-4pm  Just drop in
Contemporary glass artist, Stevie Davies, is working on a series themed using photos that explore the overlooked details, textures and patterns found all around us. Photography and sketches have been translated into mixed media artworks, primarily made using fused glass and metals.

FIGMENT Derby

This free, participatory, community arts event will see Cathedral Green transform in to a celebration of creativity! Produced by a team of brilliant volunteers, this is a place for artists, makers and audiences to play! Meet artists, performers and sculptors and share your inner-artist with us. FIGMENT Derby will be the first FIGMENT in Europe as part of an international programme in North America and Australia.

Micro:bit Workshop

From writing your name in lights, controlling robots, to watering your plants - the possibilities are endless with a BBC micro:bit! Every Year 7 pupil will have received a micro:bit - a pocket-sized computer that aims to engage young people in engineering! Bring yours or borrow one at the session.

Meet the STEAM-Powered Makers - Graeme Smith and Andrew Martyn Sugars 2-4pm  Just drop in
As a freelance maker and designer, Graeme brings vast experience to the Silk Mill. He also designed and built some of our bespoke interactive features in the nature gallery at the Museum & Art Gallery! Andrew adopts many making disciplines to create engaging experiences.  From woodwork, arduino, kinetic sculpture and electronics - Andrew brings his Forest School Training experience to his practice.

Our project theme “Made by the Makers of Today” is a primary focus for the coming months and years. We will be offering volunteer co-production opportunities that will excite and challenge everyone, developing our collective skills and enabling us to make the Museum of Making together.
