Super Heroes, Comedy and Entertainment Blast Off in Derby Cathedral Quarter

Derby Comedy Festival will burst into life in the Cathedral Quarter on Saturday 16th April with a day of free entertainment for all the family in the Market Place.

‘Blast Off!’ will be the launch event for Derby Comedy Festival (Friday 29th April to Sunday 8th May). It has been produced by Furthest from the Sea and supported by the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID).

The one-day family friendly event will have a super hero theme - featuring a cavalcade of comic book heroes and villains, interactive workshops, challenges and performances. The day will also be part of the first CQ Saturdays Knickerbocker Glorious event of 2016 with comedy, music, street theatre and dance.

Visitors are being asked to dress up as their favourite ‘super hero’ and join martial arts-based workshops to learn super-human moves from group Cordao de Ouro Capoeira Derby as well as street theatre actors, the Lost Boys.  On the flip side, there is also the chance to learn the dastardly deeds of a classic super villain with actor Vincent Saxby and test their strength of will and courage with the ‘Lego Walk’.

Live music will feature on the CQ Saturdays Knickerbocker Glorious stage between 11am and 3pm. Performers include local singer/songwriters Georgia Fowler, Chris Baldwin, Charlie Scotton and Amy Illingworth; four-piece band ‘Motherhood and Apple Pie’; Cathedral Quarter-based Foot Fusion School of Dance and ‘Run, Link, Run’ – the Derby-based three-piece band with a special set of 'Hero' themed music and video game themes.

Derby Comedy Festival will include more than 60 different events and performances.  Venues in the Cathedral Quarter include The Old Bell Hotel on Sadler Gate, Bean Caffe at Friar Gate Studios, The Blessington Carriage and Déda on Chapel Street, and the Guildhall Clubrooms off the Market Place. As well as hosting events, businesses in the Cathedral Quarter will be supporting Derby Comedy Festival with a number of special offers and promotions. Look out for the flyer which will be distributed on Trent Barton buses, at the Comedy Festival events and via the Cathedral Quarter Rangers.
