Welding Project Yields First Customer Order

A group of Fabrication and Welding students have delivered the first of their specially-designed salt and pepper pot holders to take pride of place on the tables in the College’s Engine Shed restaurant at the Roundhouse campus.

Harry Stone (18) from Hilton, Elliott Walton (18) from Mickleover and Lewis Long (19) from Swanwick decided to design and produce the cruet sets using cutlery as an eye-catching feature for the training restaurant.

Harry explained: “We talked to the Engine Shed restaurant about what they needed and went away to design the cruet sets as an extra project alongside their course. They really liked the design and we have now delivered ten to the restaurant.”

Elliott continued: “We hope that restaurant customers will see the cruet sets and perhaps put in their own orders.  It would be great to have this as an additional sideline to our level three course next year.”

Lecturer Peter Boulton-Lear concluded: “This group of students have been excellent and several of them have done additional projects to further develop their skills at the end of the study programme.

“We encourage students to use the skills their course has helped develop to see where it takes them. By helping facilitate their ideas we hope to see more projects like this in the future.

“Harry, Elliott and Lewis have worked particularly hard and shown a great entrepreneurial talent for making these holders for the Engine Shed restaurant.

“They have used a wide range of skills to develop the design and functionality of the sets and it has been valuable experience for them – working for a client and delivering what they have ordered – which will hold them in good stead for their future careers.”
