ARKWRIGHT SOCIETY LECTURE SERIES: THE LESSER KNOWN HOUSES OF DERBYSHIRE – LEA HURST, THE HOME OF FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE

Lea Hurst in the Derbyshire Peak District was the winter home of the Nightingale family, bought and refurbished by Florence’s father William. Now restored and in sympathetic private hands, it retains more of the character and atmosphere of Florence Nightingale’s time than any other building with which she was associated. Adam White, former Curator of Lotherton Hall, Leeds, explains the history and significance of the house.

You’ll visit north Street and see the earliest industrial housing in Derbyshire as well as the state of the art water management system used to power the first cotton mill.

VISIT TO HOPE CEMENT WORKS

Location: Meet at the Social Club, Hope Cement Works

Cost: £15 (includes tea, coffee and biscuits on arrival)

Priority booking for Arkwright Society members. Public booking opens on Wednesday 15th March.

Hope Works, which has been in operation within the Peak District National Park for over 86 years, is Britain’s only independent cement manufacturer and one of the best performing plants in the world. Join us for a fascinating guided tour of the works beginning with a safety induction and short film on the process of making cement. The visit will continue to the Quarry Viewing Platform, followed with a look at the laboratories and control room situated within the main works.

Step into a fairy tale kingdom and meet knights, princesses and dragons. A day of magical fun for all the family to enjoy with animals, games, stories and crafts.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Trail – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are playing hide and seek but she can’t find them anywhere! Can you help Snow White to find her friends and tell her where they are hiding. Find them all and win a prize! £1

Knights, Dragons and Other Games – A variety of games to play that are fun for all the family.

Fairytale Fancy Dress ­ - Come dressed as a character from a fairy tale and enter the free prize draw!

Alpacas – Meet the alpacas and discover more about these fascinating animals.

Owls – Find out about and meet the Barn Owls, the White Faced Scops Owl, the Great Grey Owl and all their fluffy friends. Why not hold an owl for just £2?

Once Upon a Time Craft Workshop – Enter the fairy tale at this enchanting workshop. Make your own fairy or elf door and a fairy or knight puppet to take home. Drop in anytime between 11am-4pm. £3 per child (accompanying adults free).

Come with us on a journey of discovery about how local travel advanced dramatically over the last 200 years to keep up with industrial demands. Along the way we’ll tell stories about the Arkwright family, the building of the canal and the coming of the railways.

A WALK DOWN THROUGH THE LUMSDALE VALLEY

Location: Meet at the layby opposite Highfields Upper School car park entrance, Upper Lumsdale, DE4 5NA. Please park in Upper Lumsdale and not at the bottom of the Valley.

Cost: £3 – Limited places, advance booking required

A leisurely guided one mile walk down through this wooded gorge of outstanding natural beauty, exploring the stone mill ruins, ponds and waterfalls that make up this unique historical site. Please note the route down the Valley involves some steep steps and uneven paths which can be muddy and slippery. Please wear suitable footwear with a good grip. Walking poles are also recommended.
