Young People to join Manchester Camerata Orchestra for Uniquely Local Tour

Four fun, friendly evenings of well-loved classical music with a local twist.

First Art and Orchestras Live have teamed up to invite world-class chamber orchestra Manchester Camerata to work with local young people in creating a one-off tour of Eckington, Mansfield, Shirebrook and Sutton-in-Ashfield. Throughout March and April young people are taking part in creative workshops with professional musicians, composers and theatre artists to create 4 musical and theatrical performance pieces inspired by the people and places where they live.

Each unique piece, created entirely by the young people with the support of professional composers Laura Bowler and Richard Taylor, will be incorporated into one of four special concerts performed by the orchestra together with the young people at Eckington School, Create Theatre Mansfield, Shirebrook Academy and Sutton Community Academy at the end of April.

The concerts will be an opportunity for people to see Britain’s most adventurous orchestra (The Times) perform right on their doorstep, playing a programme of wonderful arrangements for 13-piece orchestra including Tchaikovsky - Sleeping Beauty Waltz, Verdi - La Donna e Mobile, Bernstein - Mambo from West Side Story, Mozart - Horn Quintet and Marriage of Figaro, Bizet – Habanera, Laura Bowler – Pleasurable, Brahms - Hungarian Dances 5, 6 & 7 and Piazzolla – Libertango. The concerts will last around 75 minutes, followed by an opportunity for audience members to meet the orchestral players and their conductor Mark Heron.

Stuart Bruce, Partnership Manager - Orchestras Live, said: “We are so excited to be co-producing the 4 Stages tour with First Art. The inspirational experiences and opportunities that young people will gain through collaboration with Manchester Camerata will culminate in a unique tour of performances in their own communities, which is very much in the spirit of Orchestras Live’s work bringing world class orchestral work to culturally under-served parts of the country.”

Peter Knott, Area Director - Arts Council England, said: “We’re proud to be creating more opportunities for people in Ashfield, Bolsover, Mansfield and North-East Derbyshire to take part in arts and culture through our investment in First Art. As one of our Creative People and Places projects, First Art aim to get more people enjoying arts and culture in the places they live. As part of 4 Stages it’s brilliant to see young people from the local area creating music and theatre with professional companies which will be enjoyed by their friends, families and neighbours. We wish them all the best for the performances.”
