We are excited to announce our upcoming residency exhibition: Circling the Square: Visions of an Unmade City with artists Ryan Heath and Katy Hawkins

If you feel like it, please bring along something which you find comforting ~ lets enjoy a collective moment of self-comfort together in the public realm

For the past two months, artists Ryan Heath and Katy Hawkins have taken up residence with Artcore Gallery as part of Circling the Square: Visions of an Unmade City. During their residency, the artists were invited to critically interrogate the situation that is Derby. Situation meaning a set of conditions in time and place – a convergence of site, non-site, place, non-place, locality, public space, context, past, present and future.

What is the purpose of public space in the City Centre in a post-retail world, where social gatherings are a thing of the past, and where indoor social spaces are out of bounds? In this exhibition and through ongoing participatory activities, both Heath and Hawkins reimagine the potential of Osnabruck Square for the city of Derby.

About Cabin Fever

Cabin Fever is a series of one month long residencies over a duration of six months. The residency offers artists the opportunity to test out ideas and make new work within an old retail cabin, located on Osnabruck Square just outside Artcore Gallery.

Cabin fever (noun) is a state characterised by anxiety, restlessness, and boredom, arising from the prolonged stay in a remote or confined place.

The residency aims to provide local artists with the time and space to create new work in response to Derby’s city landscape. So far, the artists have creatively engaged with members of the public through workshops and conversations, animating the area with exciting new work. Look out for our upcoming residency artists and workshops during the next few months.

We hope you can join us for this exciting evening of Artcore Gallery events!

About New Midland Group

New Midland Group (NMG) is a consortium of three artist-led organisations located in Nottingham: Backlit, One Thoresby Street and Primary. We work together to develop the profile and sustainability of contemporary visual arts in the Midlands, through research, activity and opportunities that are additional to the three organisations’ work.

About Artcore

Artcore is an international centre for contemporary art and creativity that is based in Derby, UK, and is home to Artcore Gallery, studios and work spaces as well as a shop and cafe. A vibrant hub for commissioning, production, presentation and debate, we offer opportunities for diverse audiences to engage directly with creative practices through participation and discussion. At Artcore Gallery we believe that contemporary art and creativity are central to the development of people and places.

New Midland Group Development Programme

Over the next 12 months NMG will continue to deliver a project intended to support established artists, individuals with an interest in working in contemporary art and anyone in between. There is an emphasis on creatives who have not engaged in formal arts education or are from backgrounds currently underrepresented within the sector. Through this programme NMG is focused on providing routes into contemporary art and better understanding and articulating the value of artist development.

The programme centres around a group of core associates who are offered a slate of activity including mentoring, collaboration and professional development with a focus on interdisciplinary research, redefining collaborative practice and building confidence, as well as sustainability, both artistic and environmental.

The project also includes an expansive public programme of free discussions, workshops and events taking place both online and across partner venues, plus bursary opportunities open to practitioners based in the Midlands.

EAST ST ARTS - Artists Workpace and Skills Development Residency Opportunity

East Street Arts have recently acquired an ex-retail property in central Derby. The property is being repurposed from its former use as a high street shop into creative working and exhibiting space on a meanwhile basis.

With the support of Derby City Council, Derby University, S.H.E.D and Artcore we have developed an opportunity for 4 local artists/groups to take part in a workspace and skills development residency this summer.

The residency will take place between June/July - September 2021 and will include access to a private workspace, shared access to a co-working/exhibiting space alongside a programme of mentoring and skills development sessions to support artists in their resilience and practice development. The CPD sessions will be a mixture of one-to-one, group, facilitated and participatory sessions. In addition we will be able to offer marketing and promotional support through the partner and extended networks of the organisations supporting this programme.

This project will serve as a case study for a wider cultural regeneration programme taking place in Derby City Centre that aims to support the local creative community and redevelop empty high street spaces.

We are particularly interested in applicants whose practice involves:

  • Establishing studio groups, networks or collectives
  • Socially engaged and participatory activities
  • Practices with an entrepreneurial focus
  • Practices that support young people and access to the arts

*Should we be able to secure this property for a longer period than the residency period there is the opportunity for the participants to continue to access the workspace at a low-cost rate after the residency has finished.

How to apply:
We’re interested to hear how this residency can assist you to develop your practice and activities, where you are hoping to get to and how we can best support you to achieve this.

We are looking for artists with an interest in cross-cultural, peer-to-peer and interdisciplinary working who can commit to 20 - 30 hours of engagement time over the duration of the programme.

To apply please send a short written statement that tells us about your practice, aims and taking part in this residency opportunity would benefit you. If you have a specific project in mind to develop during this time please provide details including who you might work with.

In addition please provide up to 5 images or videos of your work and links to your website or social media.

If you would prefer to make an application by video or voice recording, it should be no longer than 5 minutes and be provided as a google link.

If you have any questions or would like to talk more about the opportunity please contact Liz Ainge at East Street Arts.
