Artcore Gallery Updates

  • Cabin Fever

Cabin Fever is continuing over at Osnabruck Square with new Artists in Residence Ray Gumbley and Claire Pearce!

During his residency in the Cabin, Ray will take portraits of the community who either live or work in and around Osnabruck Square. The work will be archived and placed in a time capsule along with cuttings and photographs added by the public.

Ray Gumbley is a photographer based in Nottinghamshire. His practice is inspired by people, dance, haiku poetry, fashion, tattoos, classical and contemporary art and burlesque culture. Ray believes that everyone is looking for that one image that captures, inspires and defines them.

If you or anyone you know is local to the area and would like to get involved either by having your portrait taken by Ray or sharing some of your memories of living or working in Derby and the Osnabruck Square area, then please send a message to admin@artcoreuk.com.

Ray will be on residence in the Cabin from 18 June - 17 July.

From the 19th June we have another artist in residence with us at the cabin: Claire Pearce!

Claire Pearce is a contemporary visual artist based in Derbyshire. Her practice explores how female identity is shaped by the socio-political landscape, such as the influence of technology, popular culture, fashion and storytelling. Pearce works across a range of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, object-making, video, performance and installation.

During her residency in the Cabin, Claire will be utilising the window space to curate a diorama using the public’s contributions to build a new narrative scene. The scene will be outward facing so passers-by can engage with the work in a COVID-safe way. She will also be running a series of workshops such as block printing and 3D model making. There will also be an ongoing collage station both in the cabin and within the Artcore Shop!

Claire Pearce will be in residence at the cabin from 19 July – 14 August 2021.

  • In Our Thoughts

In Our Thoughts Memorial Tree has come a long way and it’s great to see the progress.

This is a project to which anyone can participate and contribute their responses to the pandemic. Carrying on with our tree sculpture that we had made a good start in May, our first session was over at the Derby Market Square in the beginning of June, which was a really good start to this month. We had lots of responses from the public drawing and writing on our leaves of thoughts and putting them up on the tree. We are very thankful to all of the dedicated and hardworking volunteers who contributed greatly towards producing this memorial. We are hoping to display it in July and showcase the meaning and thought behind this artwork.

Follow us on social media to keep an eye out for upcoming events. You can also take a look over on our website: www.artcoreuk/in-our-thoughts to see all the progress.

  • Artcore at Derby Market Place

Beginning of June we had a great opportunity to set up a hut in the wonderful Derby Market Square, with the lovely weather suiting us well. During the week, each day we had a different activity to showcase what we do at Artcore and get the public involved.

- 1st June we had a display of our lovely Craftcore packs with our shop manager and artist Linda Foot painting and using the materials from the packs to show how you can enjoy and create unique designs.

- 2nd June our lovely participants from Beginning to Becoming course showing their success and telling their story of their achievement.

- 3rd June we had our ‘In Our Thoughts’ session over at the hut. Participants and volunteers came to help put the tree together, paint it and add elements such as paper flowers and butterflies. The public, especially younger children, really enjoyed watching and contributing a leaf with their thoughts on it to be put up on the branches.

- 4th June was a busy day with Teddy Bear Demonstration from artist Dawn Campion as well as Pottery Demonstration from artist Kathryn Borg.

We really enjoyed having this sunny week over at our little hut, sharing a piece of Artcore with the world.
