Buxton Fringe reports big rise in early Fringe entries!

Buxton Fringe has reported a huge surge in entries compared to this time last year.

At the close of the discounted ‘earlybird’ entry period, there were 107 entries compared to 62 at the same stage in 2018. Organisers believe the 73% increase is partly due to a special £40 early entry discount but also that performers are keen to celebrate Fringe40 - the Fringe’s exciting 40th Fringe.

Those entering by the end of March can still take advantage of a discounted entry fee of £70. The strict final deadline for the printed programme is April 21.

Events can be seen building up on the Fringe website. An already bumper music section includes jazz singer Annette Gregory, the Blues Train courtesy of Friends of Buxton Station, several recitals from Mr Simpson’s Little Consort, early music from Partita - celebrating 25 years of Fringe involvement, and all the way from Nashville, singer Mark Allen appearing with local musician Peter Buxton.

Comedy treats include Accomplished Ladies - a period drama sketch show, multi-award-winning Alasdair Beckett-King, the irresistible Chamian Hughes, Fringe Award winners Nathan Cassidy and Harriet Braine, and a laugh-a-minute Laurel & Hardy cabaret.

Theatre is also looking strong with the return of Debbie Cannon’s Green Knight and Third Pier’s Old Bones plus eagerly-awaited productions such as The Suitcase, the Beggar and the Wind from award-winning Gare du Nord Theatre and explosive historical drama The Riot Act from Breathe Out Theatre as well as popular Rec Youth Theatre’s Zero For Young Dudes.

With something in every category, audiences can look forward to a wide range of entertainment ranging from the return of Spoken Word Award Winner Genevieve Carver to dragon-filled family entertainment from Babbling Vagabonds in Grinlow Woods and songs and stories at Serpentine Community Farm. Fringe40 also sees the return of the ever-growing Buxton Art Trail plus a host of other Visual Arts events.

Fringe chair Keith Savage adds: “Fringe40 is going to be exciting! With so many new artists and performers coming to Buxton, new venues and ventures - the choice on offer to audiences will be broader than ever. It makes me very proud that the town can sustain such a feast of entertainment.”

This year's specially extended Fringe runs from Wednesday 3 to Wednesday July 24. The printed programme will be distributed from the beginning of June and will be celebrated at an evening party at The Green Man Gallery, Buxton on Saturday June 8th - all welcome. A new Fringe app will also be launched at this time making it even easier to navigate the Fringe during July.

The Fringe is grateful to all its venues around the town and beyond, including the spectacular Buxton Dome, home of the Fringe's sponsor and close partner, The University of Derby.
