With summer beginning to come to a close, and September just around the corner, it's an ideal time to take a look at what we've got coming up at the Barn in the next few weeks. With our events programme having just restarted, we have plenty of great talks, activities and workshops coming up for you to get involved with.

 

'150 Bird Species in a Year by Public Transport'

Wednesday 1st September, 7:30pm, £4 (£2 Friends)

Join Jim Brown at our monthly Dronfield Wildlife and Natural History Group lecture, as he recounts his challenge of seeing 150 bird species in a year using only public transport around the city Sheffield. Tickets available from our website, or just turn up on the evening at the Barn!

 

Art Workshops with John Sutcliffe

Every Thursday in September, 1:30pm-4:30pm, £20 per session (£15 Friends)

We're delighted to announce the return of our popular art workshop led by the Barn's Artist-in-Residence, John Sutcliffe. Come along to try your hand at a world of different mediums from watercolour to sculpture to print making to Digital media to Art History. Suitable for all – from complete beginners to those wanting to improve their skills and try new things! All sessions will take place in the Peel Centre. Monthly Quilting Workshop

Friday 10th September, 10am-1pm, £5 per session

September sees the return of our friendly quilting group to the Barn for their regular monthly workshops. Under the guidance of Susanne Haywood, come along and learn new techniques and receive support and advice for your projects. Quilting workshops will be held on the second Friday of each month, and you can join in for just £5 per session. See our website to book your places.

 

Artisan & Producers' Market

Sunday 12th September, 10am-3pm, FREE ADMISSION

If you missed our pop-up markets throughout August, the good news is that there's not long to wait before the next of our full Artisan & Producers' Markets will take place. Come along on Sunday 12th September to find a fantastic range of stallholders, located both inside in the Barn and in our beautiful gardens. Full details of confirmed stallholders to be announced soon, so make sure you keep an eye on our social media and website.

 

Botanical Illustration Course

Starting Monday 20th September, 10am-1pm, £75 for six lessons (£60 Friends)

We're excited to be able to offer a six-week course in the art of botanical illustration led by Rachel Dawson. Experience the delights of seed pods and flowers from the ‘cut flower garden’ and learn a range of techniques to create detailed and life like botanical studies. All abilities welcome. Suitable for anyone who enjoys drawing and painting in detail. A variety of materials will be provided but students can also bring their own. A list of required equipment will be provided on booking. Lessons will be held weekly from Monday 20th September till Monday 25th October. Limited availability - head to our website to book online.

 

Dry Stone Walling Course

Wednesday 22nd September 9:30am-12pm & Thursday 23rd September 9:30am-4pm, £60 (£54 Friends)

Join a two day course, where you will learn the history and technique of dry stone walling before heading to Brunts Barn near Grindleford Railway Station on day two to put what you have learned into practice! Limited places available, so booking is essential to avoid missing out - see our website for more details.

 

The Memoirs of Lady Ann Fanshawe

Thursday 30th September, 7:30pm, £4 (£2 Friends)

To conclude the month, feel free to join the next of Old Dronfield Society lectures. This talk by Ann Brown will discuss the life of Lady Ann Fanshawe, the daughter of Robert Fanshawe of Dronfield. Click here to book online via our website, or simply turn up on the night!


Wedding Closures

This summer has been a particularly busy wedding season for us here at the Barn - congratulations to all the happy couples who have got married with us so far this year. It has been a pleasure to have been a part of your special day, and we've loved seeing the wonderful images afterwards! 

Whilst this year's wedding season is beginning to draw to a close, please note that the Barn, grounds and gardens will still be closed to the public on the following dates: 

  • Saturday 4th September
  • Saturday 18th September
  • Saturday 25th September
