Croots Farm Shop and Café in Derbyshire takes part in Open Farm Sunday 2018

Visitors to Croots Farm Shop and Café will get a close-up view of sheep shearing, lambs, a working blacksmith and Shire horses when it joins growers and producers up and down the country for Open Farm Sunday next month.

There will also be a barbecue, music, a bouncy castle, competitions raising money for MacMillan Cancer Care, farm machinery displays and butchery demonstrations in and around the shop based at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, near Duffield, between 11am and 3.30pm on Sunday June 10.

Other attractions include a learn about lambing display by Scarsdale Vets and Shire horse dray rides.

The event is free to enter and Croots Farm Shop and Café will be open as usual during the day, with events running in the fields and barns around the shop.

Billed as the farming and food industry’s open day and organised by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), Open Farm Sunday gives farmers and the food industry the chance to showcase their work.

This is the third year that Croots Farm Shop and Farnah House Farm have taken part in the national event.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming visitors, so we can highlight the importance of British farming and the food industry,” said co-owner Kay Croot, who grew up at Farnah House Farm and now runs the shop with her husband Steve.

“Croots Farm Shop and Café specialises in locally-sourced meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables and delicatessen products in our shop and café and this is a great chance to shine a light on why supporting British farming matters.

“We are very proud of the food we sell in the shop and the café and are looking forward to giving our customers a glimpse at what goes on behind the scenes. There is a growing interest in farming and where our food comes from, which was reflected in our recent lambing open day event when we welcomed more than 1,000 visitors.”

Croots Farm Shop has won numerous awards for its products, and Steve Croot was named Derbyshire Local Food Hero 2014 at the Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards. In the 2016 Derbyshire Life Food and Drink Awards, Croots won the accolade of Outstanding Ambassador for Local Produce in Derbyshire.

Last year, Croots also won the People’s Choice in the Midlands Award in the Family United Business Awards.

Kay Croot has recently joined the board of directors of FARMA, the trade association supporting farm retail.

It is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm) and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Croots runs Fresh Fish Thursdays between 9am and 1pm on Thursdays.
