Derby College Students Create Colourful Mural

Art & Design students at Derby College’s Joseph Wright Centre have created a colourful mural in the garden of a Derby nursing home for the residents and visiting families to enjoy.

Staff at Amber Lodge in Osmaston Road visited the College to see some of the students’ work and chose a design depicting a sunny countryside scene.

The design was led by student Yoana Boynova (18) who said: “I wanted to create something colourful that would bring a smile to everyone’s faces.

“Having completed the design with everyone’s input, we spent about five days painting the wall and are very pleased with the results.”

Amber Lodge co-manager Sheila Smith added: “The students have done a fantastic job.  All the residents, families and staff love it and I hope they will return to do further work here in the future.”

Art & Design lecturer Pete Gardner concluded: “We have done a wide range of community projects including various charities and care homes.

“It is valuable work experience for our students – teaching them how to work to a brief and liaise with a client to get a job done on site.”

The mural was officially opened by the Mayor of Derby Cllr John Whitby who is pictured with the students in front of the mural they have created at Amber Lodge.
