Derby Conference Centre leading the way with 2020 zero landfill plan

Derby Conference Centre leading the way with 2020 zero landfill plan

Having partnered with award-winning waste management company ACM Environmental, The Derby Conference Centre has put an ambitious plan in action to reach a 0% landfill goal by the end of this year.

At a time when many companies are still in the early stages of reviewing their environmental impact, this unique and versatile Derby venue is already tackling the issue head on and making real changes in its day-to-day operation.

In conjunction with their recently-appointed contractor ACM Environmental, they have created three new waste streams which would previously have been considered as ‘general waste’ – namely food, cardboard/paper and plastic. Each of these are now collected individually and sent to the appropriate recycling facility, preventing them from finding their way to the country’s ever-increasing landfill mass.

Individual departments within The Derby Conference Centre’s team are all playing their part in this aspirational plan. Each area within the business has its own set of clearly labelled bins to ensure that they separate the main items of waste which can now be recycled. The zero landfill goal may be a bold one, but with such a determined team effort DCC are most definitely up to the challenge!

DCC Managing Director Matthew Hutchings told us:

“As the MD it is my responsibility to ensure that we conduct business in the right way and reducing our impact on our environment is just one of the ways we can do this.  When I arrived here I was keen to understand how the Derby Conference Centre contributed to the wider issue of waste and I was determined to discover how we could improve our practices. Having sourced an award-winning partner in ACM Environmental we are confident that we can achieve our goal of zero landfill by the end of 2020”

With conference rooms, meeting rooms and 50 en-suite bedrooms within their Grade II listed building, making these changes in such a relatively short timescale is no mean feat. Their determined action however sets a high standard for other businesses and many will undoubtedly be looking to follow their example in actively addressing environmental responsibility.
