BBC Novels Writing Competition

We were overwhelmed by the number of entries to our 'Isolation' writing competition, as part of the BBC Novels That Shaped Our World programme. We had 147 entries altogether, which will be published as an eBook on BorrowBox, and our judges have made their decision on our winners whose stories will shortly be published on our website. Congratulations to them, and thank you to everyone that took part!

Baby Babble
Our popular Baby Babble sessions are back online - and this time they're live! We've got six spaces for families with babies aged 4-9 months to sign up and join us on MS Teams, which you can do by contacting ask.library@derbyshire.gov.uk. These start on Thursday 11th May and will run for five weeks.

Kate Greenaway Medal Shadowing Project
Here's a reminder that we are running a book group for the Kate Greenaway Shadowing scheme for children and families (suitable for age 6-11) to look at the books on the shortlist and see how they would judge the books and choose the winner based on the official criteria.

If you think your child would like to take part, or if you would like more information, please contact the Library Information Service on 01629 533444 or via ask.library@derbyshire.gov.uk.

Derbyshire Record Office
Ferodo's Brilliant Advertising

This picture is a detail from a very funny advertising poster from 1927. It was made by Ferodo, the brake-lining manufacturer based in Chapel-en-le-Frith. We love it so much, it’s included in our 50 treasures! You can see the whole poster in our online exhibition, which also showcases some of our other Derbyshire Treasures.

Buxton Museum & Art Gallery
Travelling Stories, and online exhibition from Buxton Museum and Art Gallery

The museum staff are looking forward to seeing some actual visitors when we open the doors again on 18 May.

In the last 14 months, instead, and like most places, Buxton Museum has been reaching out to digital audiences via its websites and social media. Travelling Stories is our latest digital exhibition, of artist commissions responding to artefacts in the collections.

In 2018, the Derbyshire Schools Library Service closed. The service included artefacts and pictures which had been assembled since the 1930s. Now they needed new homes. With the help of the Esmee Fairburn Collections Fund and the Museums Association, staff at Buxton Museum have been finding these new custodians.

More than 2,000 items have been allocated to nearly 100 museums, libraries, and publicly accessible collections across Britain. Some items have been restituted to communities in North America. Others will be kept by Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, including the Arctic and Sami material.

So far, three commissions have been unveiled: Part One is a reaction to Japanese prints that found a new home at Tullie House in Carlisle, in partnership with Prism Arts. Part Two is a creative response to Aboriginal objects held in museum objects across the world, collaborating with Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and the Border Crossings Origins Festival. Part Three finds an artist closer to home in Derbyshire who has produced a piece inspired by a place that could not be further away. Have a look at our blog to find out more.

Buxton Museum has a proud heritage of working with individuals, groups, communities and other museums and galleries. It was exciting that we continued to do so throughout lockdown, albeit at a safe distance!

This Month We Recommend You Read...
We're got more of the excellent children's books available on our eBook and eAudiobook collections on BorrowBox to share with you this month, which are great choices for you and your family.

First off on BorrowBox, it's Young Adult classic Every Day by David Levithan. Every morning, A wakes up in a different body, with no discernable pattern. They never get attached, and never interfere, because tomorrow everything will be different again. That is, until he meets Rihannon and falls in love. But how can they be together if A will never be the same person? Heart-warming as well as heart-breaking, this is one the greatest Young Adult novels of the last 10 years, and you can also read the sequel from Rihannon's point of view, Another Day.

Our second pick on BorrowBox is Adventures on Trains Book 2: Kidnap on the California Comet by M.G.Leonard & Sam Sedgman. It's time for Harrison Beck to solve another mystery! When the daughter of billionare August Reza goes missing during the three-day journey from Chicago to San Francisco on the iconic California Comet, it's time for Harrison to step up and solve the mystery of the kidnapping! Can he do it before the end of the journey? Look out for the first book in the series, The Highland Falcon Thief, also on BorrowBox.

Our eAudiobook pick on BorrowBox this time is The Tale of Angelino Brown by David Almond. When a little Angel lands in Bert the Bus Driver's pocket, it's the most amazing miracle, and he's loved by Bert, his wife Betty, and all the school children. But Acting Head Teacher Mrs Mole is not so sure. Nor is Professor Smellie, or the mysterious bloke in black who claims to be a School Inspector. Then there's Basher Malone – big, lumbering Basher Malone. He REALLY doesn't like Angelino. And it looks like he's out to get him ... Absolutely hilarious and heartwarming, the tale of this adorable angel will make kids and grown ups laugh out loud.

Need a further suggestion? We're always delighted to suggest a story! Contact us on Facebook, Twitter, or ask.library@derbyshire.gov.uk and we'll do our best to find you something fantastic!
