Innovative Learning Service Supports Child Safety Week

An innovative Derby-based video teaching and learning service for children and young people of all ages and abilities has released more than 500 child safety videos which are available to watch online free of charge as part of national Child Safety Week (June 7 to 13).

The YouTeachMeToo.com platform contains thousands of videos which UK teachers and education support specialists have created for children and young people to watch at home and in the classroom. The virtual library includes a broad range of safety and independent-living topics as well as academic, arts and sport subjects.

The inclusive teaching and learning service usually costs £10 a month for families but its founder, former Derby headteacher Paul Rose, has pledged to release all the videos focused on child safety to mark the start of this national week. Moving forwards the content will continue to be free for parents, carers and teachers to access indefinitely.

The move has been prompted by research by ROSPA reveals that 67,000 children a year have accidents in the kitchen alone and they identify that inexperience, inquisitiveness, bravado and horseplay being amongst the main reasons for such incidents.

Each video shows a situation that might have dangerous consequences for a child – at home, outside the home and online.

They can be watched numerous times and many are accompanied by a question-prompt sheet to help the adult lead the conversation in an age-appropriate way with the child or young person, listen to their reaction to see if they have understood the dangers or consequences and discuss with them what they should do in that situation.

Mr Rose explained: “The theme of Child Safety Week 2021 is ‘share because you care’ which prompted us to share this extensive video library because, quite simply, as parents and educationalists, we care about the safety of children and young people.

“These child safety videos and the thousands of teaching and learning videos in the full library have been used through our sister platform YouTeachMe.com in many mainstream and special schools and we have also adapted many of the resources so that they are accessible to deaf learners.

“By watching the video with a trusted adult, the child or young person will be better prepared before they are in the real situation.

“Obviously the advice you would give to a five-year-old would differ from, say a 15-year-old but the situation itself remains the same and each video is therefore useful throughout a child’s journey to independence.

“Having already helped children of all ages and abilities grow in confidence and stay safe, we are delighted to now be able to offer these free of charge to wider families.”
