Kinder Choir keeps on singing!!

The coronavirus lockdown has stopped many choirs in their tracks since they can no longer meet to rehearse but that’s not been enough to deter Kinder Choirs of the High Peak. Singers from as young as seven, to more experienced Youth Choir teenagers, have been learning and practising a new song at home and their efforts can now be heard on youtube .

Under a new ‘Let’s keep singing initiative’ Assistant Choir Conductor, Charlie Perry, sent choir members the music for a new arrangement of ‘Somewhere only we know’ for the youngsters to learn and then record on a backing track. The individual recordings of each voice were then edited to create a full choir of voices.

“The end result is a tribute to each and every choir member who contributed to this, as well as to the parents who helped their children with the technology. It is incredibly impressive that they learned the music all on their own and then had the terrifying experience of recording their own part alone. It just goes to show that even though we are all separated we can still keep singing together” said Charlie Perry.

The choir members come from Buxton, Bakewell, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chinley, Disley, Glossop, Hayfield, New Mills, Tideswell, and Whaley Bridge.

Musical Director Joyce Ellis, who established Kinder Choirs of the High Peak in 1991, commented: “I am so proud of all these young singers. Singing at home alone can be very challenging but it just goes to prove that with enough determination we can still make music together – but apart!”

In “normal times” the choirs rehearse at Whaley Bridge Uniting Church on Tuesday evenings.
