A Level Students Face Nervous Wait For Results

Thousands of young people across Derbyshire are nervously waiting for their A level exam results which will be published on Thursday August 18.

They include more than 300 students at Derby College’s Joseph Wright sixth form centre who are hoping to emulate the success of last year’s cohort - achieving a 98% pass rate overall with 66% of them gaining A* to C grades.

Students will be gathering at JWC from first thing ready for the paper results to be handed out from 7.30am. Many of them will have set their alarms even earlier to log onto the UCAS website for news of whether they have been accepted into their first choice university.

Among the students waiting to learn her fate is Freya Greaves (18) from Middleton who is a former pupil at Anthony Gell school and came to Derby College to study English Language and Literature, Sociology and History. Freya, who has spent the summer volunteering for archaeological digs in Buxton and Monyash, need ABB to secure a place to study Archaeology at York University with Nottingham University as her back up. She said: “I get extremely nervous in the run up to exams but, as soon as they finished, I was determined to put them out of my mind and get on with enjoying the summer. “I will see if I can get any information on the UCAS website but not all universities post information on there so I don’t know if I will be turning up to get my results knowing roughly how I have done and whether I have been accepted onto the course at York. “Whatever happens, some of the first people I will be looking for are the personal coaches at JWC who have been brilliant over the past two years.  Hopefully, I will simply be thanking them for their support rather than asking for their help in sorting things out. “All in all, I feel pretty confident but you never know until you open that envelope and see the marks.”

The Derby College higher education, apprenticeship and careers teams will be on hand at JWC throughout the day to discuss students’ next options.  For more information about all the further and higher education courses at Derby College and apprenticeship vacancies, please visit www.derby-college.ac.uk or call 0800 0280289.
