Midlands Dancer Returns to Region in Breathtaking Show: Africarmen

For one date only, on Thursday 16 March, Tavaziva perform their breath taking interpretation of the Carmen story at Déda, Derby’s Creative Centre for Dance, Contemporary Circus and Outdoor Work.

Africarmen is an interpretation of the renowned Carmen story; played out through the entanglement of desire, deceit and corruption in an African township where military corruption is rife, Carmen dangerously and defiantly ignores all warnings in the perusal of a better life but finally succumbs to a tragic end.

Originally from Leicester, Lisa Rowley returns to the region to perform the title role of Carmen. Having begun her dance training at Leicester’s DuPont, Lisa graduated Laban in 2008 before joining Tavaziva in September 2010. Her previous work has included international touring with Transitions Dance Company and becoming a founding member of the cutting edge Joss Arnott Dance Company.

Africarmen, now in its final tour, has received positive reviews from critics. The Times stated ‘Tavaziva’s facility for devising hot, liquid motion is indisputable… His seven strong cast is sharp, swift and superbly fit’

Established in 2004 and led by Zimbabwean-born choreographer Bawren Tavaziva, Tavaziva’s unique style is a choreographic synthesis of ballet, contemporary and African dance. The performance features an original music score, specially composed and arranged by Fayyaz Virji of the acclaimed Warriors International, creating a powerful, beautiful, and unmissable show – Bawren Tavaziva’s most ambitious work to date.

Audiences can catch this stunning performance, one of the last chances to see it as part of its final tour, at Déda on Thursday 16 March at 1.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £12.00 full/£10.00 concession, to book contact the Box Office on 01332 370911 or visit www.deda.uk.com
