PACKAGE HOLIDAY part of DEparture Lounge Festival 2017

One lucky theatre company’s chance to embark on a package holiday of a different kind

Ahead of this year’s DEparture Lounge, Derby Theatre’s festival of fresh, new and exciting performance, now in its fifth year, Derby Theatre and The HopBarn in Southwell, Nottinghamshire will once again team up to offer one lucky theatre company from the region with an exciting new initiative called Package Holiday.

Package Holiday provides one lucky emerging theatre company from the region with a fantastic opportunity to develop their work, and a specific performance piece, at an artistic retreat in the beautiful Nottinghamshire countryside before previewing it at the DEparture Lounge Festival in July.

Package Holiday will offer the selected company: one week of free rehearsal space from Monday 26 June until Saturday 1 July and on-site company accommodation at The HopBarn, a beautiful converted barn in Nottinghamshire; a programmed performance at DEparture Lounge on Friday 21 July, a performance fee of £500, branded as our ‘Departure Lounge Package Holiday Production’ plus guidance and support on funding applications.

We are looking for work from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic Artists, in recognition of these artists being currently underrepresented in contemporary theatre and Derby Theatre’s ambition to address this imbalance, and we are also looking for: contemporary performance, work that fits into a studio space, a piece that is between 50 minutes and 1 hour long, work that is already in the process of development, and that will be complete by Friday 21 July. We are also open to receiving split applications. This is where you would like to present a finished show at the Festival but develop a different show at The HopBarn.

Due to the demands of DEparture Lounge, the chosen company/show will have three hours to get-in and run their technical rehearsal prior to performance, so please make sure this is achievable.

The following are desired elements for companies applying for Package Holiday:  applicants who live or work in the East Midlands, work that will be part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017 (DEparture Lounge is traditionally a platform for Edinburgh previews) therefore, we would like this opportunity to relieve some of the financial pressure of taking a show to Edinburgh by offering free rehearsal space and relieve some of creative pressure by offering a preview in a supportive and friendly environment).

PLEASE NOTE: Package Holiday is an opportunity designed to support work that is already in development. It is not a commission, and does not have any financial support attached to it, aside from the performance fee.

How to apply for Package Holiday:

Please submit an application to Dan Nicholas at d.nicholas@derby.ac.uk by Friday 14 April,  outlining the following:

Who you are (by submitted a biography or CV)
Where you are based
Information about the show/s you would like to develop and perform
Why and how this Package Holiday opportunity will benefit you
What stage your production is currently at, and how you will be supporting the production financially
If you intend to take your show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

The interview date will be at Derby Theatre on Friday 28 April.

DEparture Lounge, Derby Theatre’s hugely successful summer festival of fresh, new and exciting performance returns for a fifth year, and will run from Thursday 20 until Sunday 23 July.

DEparture Lounge, produced by In Good Company, a professional development programme for artists making work in the East Midlands, will once again see Derby Theatre transformed into a lush garden stage, a festival site where audiences and artists alike can see the very best in contemporary performance, support regional artists to take flight and get involved in lots of inspiring workshops and discussions.
