Derby College student Luke is Collis Engineering’s first degree apprentice

Derby-based rail engineering business Collis Engineering Ltd has taken on its first degree apprentice after finding the ideal candidate at a careers fair held at The Roundhouse

Luke Payne, who has a level 3 qualification in advanced manufacturing and engineering from Derby College Group, got the chance to apply for the role after meeting the company’s directors at the Diversityin2Engineering event.

Derby College’s inclusive café now offers you a bigger welcome!

Derby College Group runs the Welcome Café in Derby. However, this is no ordinary café but also provides training opportunities for people with special educational needs and disabilities. And due to its continuing success, it is now opening four days a week.

And its success continues with being awarded a five-star hygiene rating, which reflects the care and attention as to how the café is run.

The two organisations responsible for leading on the promotion, marketing and development of the visitor economy in the Peak District, Derbyshire and Derby have formed a partnership that has been recognised by VisitEngland in a government programme to establish a new structure for the tourism industry.

Visit Peak District & Derbyshire and Visit Derby have come together as Visit Peak District, Derbyshire and Derby to receive official Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) status from VisitEngland.

Healthwatch Derbyshire, the county’s health and social care watchdog, is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a plea to the public to continue having their say about services that affect their lives.

Four contemporary artists awarded residencies at LEVEL Centre

Since its launch in 2021 the Level Residency Lab, with support from Arts Council England, has supported 24 professional artists who either identify as disabled or whose work has access at its heart. The selected artists, all with ambitious ideas that strengthen Level’s charitable mission to ‘Celebrate the Art that Difference Makes’, will continue to explore contemporary practice in rural Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service teams up with Derby College Group in animal rescue techniques

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has partnered with Derby College’s  Broomfield Hall Animal Unit and is receiving training on how to deal with a broad range of animals.
Over the next couple of months, four groups of firefighters will be working with animal trainers and gaining in-depth knowledge of dealing with animals in the wild, especially those in distress.

Jon Collins, Head of Land-based studies said: “It’s great that we are able to support Derbyshire Fire and Service with animal handling training.

New Derbyshire restaurant Fork & Furrow is proving a big hit with diners from around the county

THE manager of one of Derbyshire’s newest restaurants wants his establishment to become the go-to place for elevated British cuisine in the county.

And Tom Shelbourn – who has previously worked in a five-star hotel that boasts two AA Rosettes and a Michelin star – wants the Fork & Furrow drinks menu to be talked about just as much as the food, with an eclectic mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options plus bespoke cocktails created by mixologists specifically for the countryside eatery.

Entrepreneurs Further Strengthen Charity’s Regional Focus

Leading East Midlands charity, Star Trust, has welcomed several new business leaders and entrepreneurs as patrons and trustees.

Star Trust is run by local business owners and entrepreneurs. Since its launch more than ten years ago it has donated more than £777,000 and awarded grants to 100 East Midlands-based charities.

Kavita Oberoi OBE and Tony Hillary have joined as patrons of the charity.

Ex-serviceman uses army training to help us all with waste management, from spring cleaning to decluttering

A British army veteran is using his military training to serve communities and the environment after setting up a waste management company with the aim of helping people get rid of rubbish in the most planet-friendly way.

Tyler Bloomhill, of Breedon-on-the-Hill near the South Derbyshire border, says his training and service with the British Army’s 4 Armoured Medical Regiment are now helping him in his new venture: waste management company Kwiktip Limited.

Adventure Challenge Lined Up For Coronation Bank Holiday

Derbyshire’s specialist child exploitation charity, Safe and Sound, is inviting people to spend the King’s Coronation bank holiday tackling an action-packed fundraising challenge.

Monday May 8 has been declared a Bank Holiday following the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and people are being encouraged to join the Big Help Out and make a change in their local communities.

Race Night Fun For Charity Fundraisers

A Race Night, organised by local charity Safe and Sound, romped home above target – raising more than £4,000 to enable the charity to support more children and young people across Derbyshire who are victims of or at risk of child exploitation.

More than 130 people attended the event at Nicco restaurant and bar in Pride Park including the Mayor of Derby Cllr Robin Wood and representatives from a wide range of local businesses.

Race sponsors included Loates HR Consultancy, Wathall’s, Timms solicitors, Cosy, HUUB, Colleague Box, Logic Barn and JJPR.

Cathedral Quarter Ice Rink will return for this year’s Festive Derby

We may only just be embarking on spring, but plans for the 2023 Festive Derby celebrations are well underway. Derby City Council and the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) are delighted to announce that the city’s popular ice rink will return this Christmas – and tickets are on sale now.

The undercover ice rink was a popular destination for all ages during the 2022 festive season, with 12,600 people donning their skates, around half of them children. The Cathedral Quarter Ice Rink will be back on the Market Place from 2 December until New Year’s Eve.

Derby Children’s Picture Book Award 2023 winner announced

The winner of Derby Book Festival’s fifth Derby Children’s Picture Book Award is announced today (30 March).  The winning book, from a shortlist of three, is Human Town by Alan Durant and Anna Doherty (Tiny Owl Publishing).  The children, in Years 2&3 at 51 Derby schools, voted for their favourite book on Voting Day, 28 March having read the three shortlisted books in their classes.  The book has a strong message about pollution and its impact on the natural world.  

Oberoi Foundation Marks International Women’s Month With Charity Support

A community-based organisation in the West Midlands, which supports women who have experienced domestic abuse, honour-based violence and forced marriage, has received vital funding from a charitable foundation set up by Derby-based entrepreneur Kavita Oberoi OBE.

The Oberoi Foundation has marked International Women’s Month in March by awarding a grant to The Circle, a global feminist organisation which supports frontline grassroots organisations in the UK and some of the world’s most vulnerable countries to tackle gender-based violence.
