Three work colleagues take on non-stop 55-mile Derbyshire Heritage Way walk for lifesaving charity

 

Three work colleagues are challenging themselves to the max by taking on a non-stop 55-mile heritage walk through Derbyshire to raise money for St John Ambulance.

 

Married couple Claire and Tim Hollingshurst and their work colleague Rich Trevatt, who all work at science company Lubrizol’s UK headquarters in Hazelwood, will be walking all 55 miles of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way next month, without stopping.

 

The trio are going the distance in aid of St John Ambulance, named by Lubrizol as its UK-wide charity earlier this year.

New Ambassadors Fly The Flag For Safe and Sound

Derbyshire’s specialist child exploitation charity, Safe and Sound, has recruited more local people to help raise awareness of the dangers facing vulnerable children and young people.

Entrepreneurs Persha Ward and Nadia Jane Asamoah as well as University of Derby lecturer Bev Crighton and marketing specialist Claire Morrison have become official ambassadors for the charity.

Mother-of-two Persha Ward runs her own business administration business S&A Management and was supported by Safe and Sound as a teenager.

Lonsdale Pool Re-opens After Vital Repairs

A long-established swimming pool in a Derby suburb will re-open on Friday May 19 after more than three months of disruption which, staff feared, could spell the end of the road for the popular community facility.

Lonsdale Pool in Bishop Lonsdale Way in Mickleover, was built around 50 years ago and was owned by the University of Derby until it was taken on by Lonsdale Swimming & Sports Trust in 2007 after the surrounding land was sold for housing.

Derby College student cements his place in national bricklaying competition

A Derby College student has a place in the final of a bricklaying competition after he was crowned regional winner.

Matthew Woolley, from Alvaston, Derby. came top of the senior category in the Guild of Bricklayers competition, which was held at Ilkeston Community College, part of the Derby College Group (DCG).

The 21-year-old who studies at Ilkeston is in his 2nd year of bricklaying training, having started back in 2021.

He has recently embarked on an apprenticeship with Major Oak, Design and Construction.

Derby Book Festival appeal for children’s books

Derby Book Festival and Marketing Derby are appealing to local residents to have a rummage for any children’s books that are no longer needed and are lurking in cupboards at home.  These will be provided to less fortunate children in the city who may not have books at home.  The appeal is launched to coincide with this year’s Festival, which will be held from 19 – 27 May which Marketing Derby supports each year as do many of its Bondholders.

The audience votes who becomes Pop Star of the Century in a fun music show at Buxton Fringe Festival presented by the Peak District based Charnley Bruvvers, Alan and Chris.

Competing will be the likes of Elvis, Cliff, Agnetha from Abba, Amy, John Lennon and more and the audience will also be invited to sing along on the choruses of timeless songs.

Stitching Community and Making History

In just three months 282 residents from the parish of Brailsford and Ednaston have worked together to create an enormous 10.85-meter-long narrative embroidery inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry to celebrate the coronation of HM King Charles III.

The project was the concept of Brailsford and Ednaston Churches Together who commissioned Laura Burrill, a local Textiles Historian and Community Arts Practitioner, to design the embroidery and facilitate the delivery of the project alongside a team of enthusiastic and talented volunteers.

This year already there have been lots of exciting events at The Old Lock Up Gallery, including exhibiting artists, sales of their work and the beautiful shows. And there’s so much still to unfold here at the gallery this year.

Colourful Event Celebrates Sari Fashion

A colourful evening of fashion, entertainment and food, inspired by the Sari – a traditional outfit worn by women in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal -  will be held on Friday May 26 at Slice of India in Mansfield Road, Derby.

The evening event (6.30pm to 9.30pm) has been organised by Derby’s South Asian arts organisation, Surtal Arts, as a belated finale event for last Autumn’s Derby Season of Light – a popular family festival of activities, events and performances to celebrate the city and county’s diversity and creativity.

Both pies won their respective categories (Best Steak Pie and Best Pork Pie) at this year’s Smithfield Awards, organised by the Q Guild of Butchers and widely recognised as the meat trade’s most high profile and challenging product evaluation.
