Hardwick Hall To Host Stunning After-Dark Displays For Final Instalment Of Shine A Light

The National Trust’s Hardwick Hall near Chesterfield will host two nights of stunning after-dark displays for the final instalment of Derbyshire’s Shine A Light spectacular on Friday 17th & Saturday 18th February 2023.


Tickets for the magical events are selling fast as visitors prepare to watch Hardwick’s remarkable history unfold in a breath-taking display of light and sound projected against the dramatic backdrop of Bess of Hardwick’s Elizabethan masterpiece.

The Derby College Group is offering the chance for people to embrace their love of animals and re-train to work in dog grooming.
The 18-week Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants will be held one day a week at the Dog Grooming salon at the College’s Broomfield Hall site in Morley starting next month (February).

Discover hidden history at Derbyshire Archaeology Day

People are being invited to learn more about recent historical discoveries from across the county and get hands-on with history at Derbyshire Archaeology Day.

At the event on Saturday 21 January at the Winding Wheel Theatre in Chesterfield, there will be a series of guest talks on topics including Peveril Castle, excavations in Bolsover, and the ‘Anchor Church’ cave.

There will also be some free hands-on activities in the Winding Wheel Ballroom that are suitable for the whole family, as part of the event being organised by the Derbyshire Archaeology Day group.

The Spring 2023 issue of The Poetry Review launches at the end of March, so book now to appear in the latest issue of the UK's leading poetry journal, published since 1912.

The forthcoming Spring issue is the first issue to be edited by new editor Wayne Holloway-Smith. The issue includes new poetry, essays, visual art and reviews, and will showcase the top three winning poems from the National Poetry Competition 2022.

Celebrating 10 years of walking at Holmebrook Valley Park

Chesterfield’s Holmebrook Valley Park is celebrating 10 years of hosting a walking group this month.

On 12 January, the volunteer group leaders and other local walkers were joined by Mayor of Chesterfield Councillor Tony Rogers to explore what the park has to offer.

The Holmebrook Valley Park ‘walk with us’ walking group originally launched in 2013, but it was temporarily put on hold in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions, then launched again as soon as outdoor meeting restrictions allowed.

Guild of Fine Food launches new Great Taste Bursary for 2023

The bursary will sponsor 50 emerging micro producers to enter a product into the world's most trusted taste accredutation.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Great Taste, the Guild of Fine Food is offering 50 micro producers the chance to put one new product in front of its expert panel of Great Taste judges for free. Applications must be in by 7 February 2023.

Council plants trees in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Almost 50 trees have been planted at a site in Staveley, in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Local school children and tree wardens were joined by representatives from Chesterfield Borough Council to plant 48 oak trees on Darley Close at Staveley, as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Initiative.

Warm Welcome For Local Families

Derbyshire’s specialist child exploitation charity, Safe and Sound, has launched a ‘warm welcome’ support programme for the families they support in the city, thanks to Government’s Household Support Fund (HSF) administered through Derby City Council and Derby Communication Action.

The long-established charity will provide hot meals, energy and food vouchers, family activities as well as support and advice sessions every Friday until the end of March between 11am and 5pm.

Special Programme Supports Bereaved On Their Grief Journey

Family-owned funeral directors, Wathall’s, have confirmed dates for this year’s daytime and evening free programmes designed to help people come to terms with bereavement.

The Grief Journey programme is part of Wathall’s Dandelions Bereavement Support service which also includes support groups in Derby and Ashbourne, 1-2-1 counselling and bespoke training programmes for businesses and organisations.

The Old Lock Up Gallery 2023 Show

The Old Lock Up Gallery's first show of 2023 is on Sunday the 15th January. There will be a beautiful array of work in the gallery space.

The galleries website will be updated soon with a full catalogue of work in this all female exhibition 'Selene'. The show continues until the 4th of March and is open Friday - Sunday 10-5pm.

Derby Book Festival is challenging children and adults to write a story or poem in up to fifty words on the subject of ‘Light for its 2023 Flash Fiction Writing Competition launched today (4 January). 

The eighth Derby Book Festival will be held from 19 - 27 May 2023. The winning stories will be printed on a set of bookmarks and will be distributed across Derby and Derbyshire to promote Derby Book Festival.

Mickleover Golf Club Tees Off Centenary Year With Charity Pledge

Mickleover Golf Club has pledged to support a local charity which supports hundreds of disabled children, young adults and their families across Derbyshire in this, its centenary year.

A wide range of events have been planned throughout the year by the club in Uttoxeter Road with the proceeds going to Umbrella Derby and Derbyshire towards its extensive play and leisure programme.

The fundraising is being driven by club captains Mitch Handley and Margaret Brooks who met with Umbrella CEO Ann Rowlands to officially launch the fundraising pledge.

Wathall’s Donation Supports Local Families

Family-owned funeral directors, Wathall’s, have donated five computers to Derby’s specialist child exploitation charity Safe and Sound which will be passed onto local families in need.

The computers have been wiped clean of content and will be protected with high privacy settings before being given to young people who at present do not have access to computers to support their education.

Musical Director Wanted (January 2023)

Belper Recorder Players are looking for a new Musical Director. Our group has been in existence for almost nine years now. We play seven sizes of recorder from the garklein to the great bass and cover a wide variety of music.

We are looking for a musician (ideally a recorder player) with both conducting and adult teaching experience to help develop playing skills, to provide us with an interesting and fun repertoire and to conduct us in performances (2-3 per year).

Attend a Cultural Awareness Event

The Chesterfield Equality and Diversity Forum and Chesterfield Borough Council invite you to attend a Cultural Awareness event in January 2023.

Hosted by The Asian Association of Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, the Cultural Awareness Event will take place on 12 January 2023 from 10am to 2pm in the Town Hall in Chesterfield.

Attendees will join The Asian Association to discuss their culture and the contributions they make to the local community, as well as joining a myth busting session.
