Closing date looms for first Staunton Harold triathlon

Triathletes of all ages and experience have until midday on Wednesday June 7 to enter the first ever Staunton Harold Triathlon which will be held at the village’s picturesque country estate on Sunday June 11.

The event has been organised by Derby-based HUUB Events and will be staged in the 2000 acre family-owned Staunton Harold Estate.

Derby Theatre announces new associate company

Derby Theatre is delighted to announce that  award-winning theatre company Not Too Tame  are now an official Associate Company of the organisation. 
 
Not Too Tame are an ensemble company of actors who are firmly founded in the belief of ‘Theatre for All’. As the company names suggests, they focus specifically in creating work that breaks the boundaries of tame, polite theatre and they aim to engage with those who feel that theatre isn’t a place where they belong.

Derby's Six Streets Arts Trial announced for 24-25 June

Residents of the Six Streets area of Derby will open up their homes and gardens once again for the third Six Streets Arts Trail on the weekend of Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June.

The Arts Trail will see over 30 artists and makers displaying work in their own homes or those of friends and neighbours.

Exhibitors include painters, printers, textile artists, ceramicists, photographers and jewellery makers.

The Trail is free and open for all from 10am – 5pm on both days. Homes taking part in the trail will display balloons.

Buxton Fringe announces art contest!

With this year’s event (July 5-23) just around the corner, Buxton Fringe is already thinking about 2018 and has announced an open-to-all art competition for next year’s programme cover.

The Fringe has had some terrific artwork featured on its programme covers including this year’s photograph from designer Tom Mason featuring tiny model figures against a vintage map background. Past covers have also been provided by art students from Fringe sponsor, the University of Derby.

Derby Well Dressing Trail 2017 - free drop-in workshops

This year we are organising 2 Well Dressing Trails around Derby, one around the Cathedral Quarter at the start of June  to coincide with the Weeping Window Poppies and the second one in the Derby Arboretum at the end of June to coincide with Inspiring Derby Week

The projects will be created and exhibited from Monday 5 June to Sunday 2 July 2017.

As in previous years, Spiral Arts are inviting people to come and help create the well dressings, this can be at QUAD or at the Derby Arboretum.

Sinfonia Viva Tunes Up for Anniversary Tour

Derby-based Sinfonia Viva has confirmed the line-up for its 35th anniversary ‘Cabinet of Curiosity’ regional tour.

Sinfonia Viva is the East Midlands’ only professional orchestra. As well as building up a loyal following of classical music fans, it has won awards and national recognition for its education and community outreach work.

Highlights over the years has included a Grammy nomination for its work with Damon Albarn – leading to their inclusion on the Gorillaz album ‘Plastic Beach’ – and an invitation to record with soul music legend Bobby Womack.

Déda and Arts Derbyshire to Champion Dance with Disabled People

Déda, the Derby-based regional dance house, has been selected by Arts Derbyshire and Derbyshire County Council as the Creative Producer for a two-year project which will develop and celebrate the talents of disabled people.

Derby-based Déda, which has a national reputation for leading the fusion of dance, contemporary circus and outdoor performance, aims to establish Derbyshire as the leading county in the UK for championing the dance work of disabled people.

East Meets West at This Year’s Derby Festé

Visitors to Derby Festé this September will be able to enjoy the very best of different cultures in a two-day outdoor entertainment spectacular.

Derby Festé has been a highlight in the city’s calendar for the past 11 years and this year’s festival will be held on Friday September 29 and Saturday September 30 with the theme of fusing Western and Eastern cultures in the most spectacular fashion.

Regular visitors to Festé will have noticed that the festival is slightly later this year and this is to enable it to coincide with the climax of the Navratri Festival.

Novice Athletes Gear Up for Jenson Button Trust Triathlon: Sunday July 23

More than 300 people have already entered this summer’s Jenson Button Trust Triathlon which will be held for the third consecutive year in Derby on Sunday July 23.

Organisers, Derby-based HUUB Events, report that the largest number who have already signed up are triathlon beginners.

They will complete alongside Formula 1 McLaren Honda racing driver Jenson Button as well as seasoned and elite athletes on the day.

Burnthebook Gains International Recognition

Derby digital agency, Burnthebook, has clinched two top accolades in a prestigious international creative competition.

The Hermes Creative Awards are organised by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals in the USA.  They are held every year to recognise the achievements of creative professionals around the world who are involved in the concept, writing and design of traditional materials and programmes, and emerging technologies.

Timms solicitors and Dementia Awareness Week

Music and Dance in Derby Cathedral Quarter

Visitors to Derby Cathedral Quarter will be treated to a free entertainment line-up of music and dance at the Waterfall stage in the Market Place as CQ Saturdays Knickerbocker Glorious takes place this Saturday (May 20) between 11am and 3pm.

CQ Saturdays’ summer programme is now in full swing with something happening on most Saturdays in the coming months. It is organised by the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with a range of local arts organisations to attract more people into the area.

Derby Arena’s first 24 hour track relay set to raise thousands for charity

People from across the East Midlands are being invited to jump in the saddle and take on an epic cycling challenge as Cyclone24 comes to Derby Arena.

Now in it’s third year, having previously been held at The HSBC National Cycling Centre and Wales National Velodrome, Cyclone24 remains the UK’s only 24 hour indoor velodrome challenge, whereby riders face the unenviable task of staying awake for 24 hours, battling physical exhaustion and mental fatigue as they take to the track in teams of 6 vying to cover the furthest distance possible in the time allowance.

Ripley Well Dressing 2017

We are looking for willing artists to take up the opportunity of creating the Ripley Well Dressing 2017.

This year, the theme for the Well Dressing is 200th Anniversary of the Pentrich Revolution, so lots of scope for ideas!

The Well Dressing is made using fabric petals and glue as opposed to the traditional clay methods.  The effect is still that of a Well Dressing with less mess and easier preparation and transportation.

2nd May: John Connolly workshop: Trees, Woodlands and  Forests

Students will explore the use of Mixed media and Acrylic paints on both Paper and Canvas. We will look at Trees and Woodland in a variety of seasons. We will work fairly loosely flicking and pouring paint to get interesting effects. Students will leave the course with completed paintings including a Bluebell painting which seem to be very popular at the moment. 

Cathedral Quarter Businesses Boost Digital Skills

Businesses across Derby’s Cathedral Quarter will be attending a training workshop run by digital experts at Google as part of the area’s prize in the Great British High Street Awards.

The two-hour Google Digital Garage will be held at QUAD on Thursday May 11 and is free for businesses within the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) area.

The focus of the workshop will be on maximising a business’ digital presence by improving websites, social media, online video and Google My Business. 

HUUB Design Clinches Top Awards

Specialist wetsuit and accessories designers, Huub, has clinched two prestigious industry awards for the fifth year running after an ambitious research and development programme

HUUB clinched the Best triathlon wetsuit and best Tri-suit brands at the 220 Triathlon awards.

Huub wetsuits have been designed to improve a swimmer's position in the water, making them more hydrodynamic. They allow biceps and calf muscles to move more freely, making them more comfortable.

Derby College Hospitality Management Students Gain Vital Work Experience

Derby College has teamed up with the award-winning Bespoke Inns group to provide practical work experience for learners on the higher education Hospitality Management programme at the Roundhouse.

Three learners have so far joined the Bespoke Inns Hospitality Management Academy which is the latest stage in the College’s Employer Academy programme - designed to bridge the gap between education and the workplace.

Return Tour Signals Exciting Growth For Hubbub Theatre Company

Derby-based Hubbub Theatre Company is starting a three-date regional tour later this month to showcase the organisation’s exciting plans for the future.

Hubbub Theatre Company is an integrated ensemble of performers with and without moderate learning disabilities.

The company has re-worked its successful ‘Kessoku’ show – meaning ‘unity’ in Japanese - into a 30-minute remix featuring five of its talented performers with physical theatre and circus artist, Ria Ashcroft and Hubbub’s composer and musician, Matt Marks.

Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire takes part in Open Farm Sunday

One of Derbyshire’s most popular farm shops is giving customers the chance to go behind the scenes of a farm during a national event that’s billed as the farm industry’s open day.

Croots Farm Shop near Duffield is throwing open the gates to Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, on 11th June when it takes part in Open Farm Sunday.

Organised by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), Open Farm Sunday is the opportunity for farmers to proudly showcase British farming and food. It will be the second year that Croots Farm Shop has taken part in the national event.

CQ Saturdays Street Circus Set To Top the Bill in Cathedral Quarter

CQ Saturdays Street Circus returns to Derby’s Cathedral Quarter on Saturday May 13 with a day of free entertainment at the Waterfall stage in the Market Place.

The Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) has again teamed up with outdoor performance specialists Déda Producing for the entertainment which will be held on the second Saturday of every month in the run up to Derby Festé in September (Friday September 29 and Saturday September 30).

Bespoke Collection Box Designed For Déda

Regional dance house Déda has teamed up with Derby Museums to design an eye catching, and dynamic collection box, created in the workshops at the Silk Mill Museum.

This one-off piece of art has been designed to highlight Déda's charitable status and ambitions as well as to raise funds for its work across local communities. All money raised will be doubled by Arts Council England.

Funding for music making projects (England)

Youth Music, England's largest children's music charity, which provides funding for music-making projects, has announced new application deadlines for its grant making programmes. Grants are available to fund developmental music-making projects for children and young people up in challenging circumstances as well as projects that support the development of the workforce, organisations and the wider sector. Youth Making's funding programme is made up of three separate funds.

British Film Institute Audience Fund launched (UK)

The British Film Institute (BFI) has launched a new Audience Fund. The Audience Fund is designed to support a range of audience orientated activities such as film festivals, distribution releases, multiplatform distribution proposals, touring film programmes, large scale and ambitious film programmes. A total of £5.6million is available annually and the fund will support two types of awards.

Funding for arts & music projects (UK)

The Austin Hope and Pilkington has a new round of funding round. Grants of £5,000 are available to registered charities that have an income of over £500,000 for projects that relate to Music and the Arts with priority given to projects that focus on: 

•    Homelessness
•    Domestic abuse
•    Prisoners/offenders
•    Training/education
•    Counselling/support
•    Refugees and asylum seekers
•    Activities for those with limited access or opportunities.

The Buxton Spa Prize 2017 - Open for Entry

The Buxton Spa Prize is an open art competition celebrating the town’s culture, natural beauty and heritage. Last year the competition attracted more than 150 artists. The aim of the Buxton Spa Prize is to make the town an internationally recognised centre for visual arts.

The competition, now in it's fourth year, is for artists working in any 2D media (except photography) who are over the age of 17 on 1st April 2017. The winning artist will receive a grand prize of £5000. The Buxton Spa Prize 2017 is proudly sponsored by The Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust.

Short Contemporary “Western” Seeks Interest and Capital

The Wasteland is an independent film production from Nine Ladies Film, written and directed by Derbyshire filmmaker Stuart Wheeldon. Stuart is co-producing the work with Nick John Whittle, a screenwriter and film producer from Birmingham. The screenplay itself calls upon the experience and inimitable talents of British actors Paul Dewdney (Crossroads (2015), The Inquiry (2016)), Johanna Stanton (Dead Hungry (2009), Nightmare Box (2013)), and Irish actor Bern Deegan (Point of no Return (2016), The Telephone (2017)).

Biggest Ever Buxton Fringe!

Buxton Festival Fringe is boasting its biggest Fringe ever and will be celebrating the launch of its newly-designed programme with an open-to-all party at Buxton's The Green Man Gallery on Friday June 3rd from 7-10pm.

Buxton Opera House has a new grand piano thanks to the generosity of a local couple who loved the theatre

David and Rowena Hammond were strong supporters and have left money in their will for a new Yamaha grand. Their legacy has also provided a special robot carrier which can transport the piano safely to the nearby Pavilion Arts Centre and other venues.

''We're so grateful for this very generous gift from Mr and Mrs Hammond,' said Carol Prowse, Chairman of High Peak Theatre Trust. 

“Having such a high quality instrument will make a huge difference. It means we won't have to hire pianos in for many of our concerts in the future.”

Big Session Festival was a Big Success over Bank Holiday Weekend

Folk music lovers from across the country enjoyed another Big Session festival in Buxton, with a host of world class folk and roots talent heading for the hills over the early May Bank Holiday.

Curated by folk stalwarts Oysterband and Buxton Opera House, the event also featured Blackbeard’s Tea Party, Eliza Carthy, The Levellers, Honey Ryder and Nancy Kerr - with other highlights including a ceilidh, folk train, and walks, such as the Sunday Stroll up to Solomon’s Temple with the Commoners Choir.

On Friday 19th May, patients at the Radbourne Unit, a mental health care unit in Derby, can look forward to a visit from touring dance theatre company, Company Chameleon. The Manchester-based Company, which tours the world performing, is visiting the unit to perform and deliver a dance workshop.

Spring is in the air and local organisation, Wash Arts CIC has announced its new series of exciting sessions for its community based gardening scheme hosted at the Arena Community Allotment on Heanor Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, DE7 8DY.

'Horti- Culture’, a way of encouraging locals to have a go at growing their own fruit and veg' at a nearby Ilkeston allotment, is ready for the next influx of participants.

Buxton International Festival makes the Times top 50

Buxton International Festival has been named as one of 2017’s top 50 must-see events around the globe by music critics at The Times.

The Festival, from July 7 to 23, now ranks alongside Glastonbury, Barcelona’s Primavera Sound and Edinburgh International Festival, according to the newspaper.

“Centred on Frank Matcham’s jewel-like Opera House, the Festival honours its commitment to rare works with Mozart’s early Lucio Silla and Verdi’s first thoughts on Macbeth, presented in its original 1847 incarnation,” its Review supplement reported.

Art Fund award for museum and art gallery

Collections at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery are set to get a boost after an Art Fund grant of £40,000.

It will be invested in the museum's collection of paintings and artefacts relating to Derbyshire in the 18th and 19th centuries.

BUPA Foundation - Healthy Futures: Empowering Young Adults (UK)


The BUPA Foundation has launched a new funding round through its Healthy Futures funding programme. The Bupa UK funds practical projects to tackle challenges in health and social care and make a direct impact on people's health and wellbeing. This funding round is focused on young adults aged 18 to 25 and the Foundation is specifically interested in projects that will have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of young adults who face ongoing health challenges.
 

Better Derbyshire Dales Fund

In 2017 – 2018 Derbyshire Dales CVS have a pot of funding, which they administer on behalf of North Derbyshire CCG, Derbyshire County Council Public Health and Derbyshire Dales District Council. The funds are to support the work of new or existing community / voluntary groups or organisations that are working within the Derbyshire Dales and are in need of capital or revenue funding.
 

Healthy North East Derbyshire Partnership Small Grants Scheme 2017/18 Deadline 25th May
