A founder member of the Rock Against Racism movement in the 1970s, Red Saunders is a professional photographer who combines his photographic practice with cultural, artistic, musical, and political activism.

Choosing Derby as the location for his latest Hidden Project, Red will be casting hundreds of people from across the region to be characters in three giant photographic tableaux, featuring historic scenes of innovation and disruption from Derbyshire’s past. 

The Derby Conference Centre is encouraging university students into their careers by continuing to offer year-long placements as part of their studies. The Centre has welcomed students this year from Sheffield Hallam University and Coventry University, with the majority studying courses such as Event and Hospitality Management amongst others.

Rebecca Prime, Sales & Conference Manager, was herself a placement student in 2012 and after returning to the Centre in 2015, has worked her way up to the role she currently holds.

Local telephony specialists Invictus Communications has pledged support for plans by a city primary school to build its first greenhouse using plastic bottles – enabling pupils to grow their own flowers, fruit and vegetables.

Schools across the county are being urged by Derbyshire County Council to apply to receive a free Sakura Cherry Tree to celebrate the friendship between Japan and the UK.

Cherry Trees for Schools is coordinated by The Japan Society as part of a large nationwide project which aims to donate and plant more than 4,000 Cherry Trees in parks and public spaces in 2020 to mark the Japan-UK Season of Culture between 2019 and 2020.

A casting call, inviting local people to be part of a new artwork by international artist Red Saunders, has been issued this week from Derby Museums for the new Museum of Making.

From ghosts to regicide plots, WWII bombs to the birth of musical theatre, the hallowed halls of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane have almost seen it all. Now over 1000 of the theatre’s iconic auditorium seats will find new homes in three regional volunteer-run venues as part of its £45 million revival.
